Yea, I'd say getting lower frames with the PMDG 747 at Aerosoft's Heathrow wouldn't be particularly unusual. You're using two very detailed add-ons together there. ;) Alex

Actually this broadband speed ping is quiet unrelated, uless you are using dial up speeds. A ping is the time it takes a packet to be sent from your machine to the server and back again, and i think its used to see if the other machine is still ther but contains no data. and dosnt change even on dial up, but it does start to become an issue when you are shoveling a lot of data about or your machine is working hard or even if the server is working hard, remembering that the server has to send more or less the same data to a number of machines, which is why quiet often the pings may get higher...

OK. 8800GTS or GT. I like the price of the GT, and we've been down this road before. 10% better for $150 more. If I'm not going to bother with SLI, does the chip set of the mobo effect anything? Keep in mind I won't only be playing FS. Thanks for sticking around everyone (in this topic), I really do appreciate your advise and comments. Nick

you dont need water on core 2 duo chips unless your planning on surpassing the 3.6ghz mark. Getting to 3 should be easy enough on stock cooling, providing you reseat the heatsink with some arctic silver 5, and keep an eye on the temps (you might have to adjust the fan speeds). I have a sunbeam something cooler, that cost a whole 30$, and it keeps my cpu below 40'c usually. I found it. Its the sunbeamtech silent whisper 775. Do a google search for more details. In general it goes like this with core 2 duo chips stock-3ghz=stock cooler 3-3.3=cheap aftermarket air 3.3-3.6=expensive air...

check to see if your soundcard has both line-out and headphone out sockets... then you just connect the speakers to line-out and your headset to the headphone out socket... if you only have the one output socket, then you'll need a doubleplug... they're a couple of bucks from dick smith or jaycar etc.

Howdy folks, for those who are interested we decided to try a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick, especially since others recommend it and I managed to get one very cheap but in very good condition. The Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Pro joystick is the old joystick which many people think highly of. I have seen a few of these selling on Trade Me recently for good prices. After trying both joysticks I prefer the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick. The Sidewinder has some advantages over the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick like the hat-switch is easier to use, but in the long run my children and I...

I went for the Eee. Sure, it was slightly overpriced for its specs, but I got one very cheap (400$), and you cant beat its size (about 1/4 of a 15" laptop, and 1/2 a 12.1" laptop).

I tried that, I have a special VGA-to-TV converter. Works fine but TVs (not LCD or PLASMA) only have a 640X480 resolution so I found it pretty useless.

MIP Mapping is all about allowing the comp to display a less detailed ('smaller') version of a texture when you are far away from it... and a more detailed ('bigger') version when you are close up... by having all the scaled images pre-defined, it takes some burden off the cpu/gpu as they're not having to anti-alias on the fly or waste time showing a 512x512 texture when the object is only 32pixels wide... which should theoretically = better performance... However, it requires more memory as the comp effectively keeps in memory however many versions of the texture there...
