That really is a beautiful aircraft - shame it couldn't stay in NZ, but at least it's gone to a good overseas home.

There's two issues here, whether Tauranga should have a jet service, and whether it will . I believe it should, for the same reason I believe many larger provincial centres should - because I don't see why not. If you compare the sizes of smaller destinations served by Virgin Blue jets in Australia, you'll see that NZ do pretty poorly in terms of what services passengers have offered to them. Australia sees jets into much smaller places than NZ does, and with similar tourist attractions. Granted, the hubs are far larger than the hubs in NZ, but doesn't that strengthen the case...

QUOTE (Syncop8r @ Jul 11 2009, 02:38 PM) I have been getting PPL lessons from these guys (formerly Christchurch Flying School?) at Wigram then Rangiora. Tried to book a lesson this week only to find out they are no longer operating /sad.gif style= vertical-align:middle emoid= :( border= 0 alt= sad.gif /> A shame as they are a nice crowd. Does anyone know any more? Has been coming for wee while now. Unfortunately the move from wigram really hurt the operation, running, costs logistics etc. Go see if you can join up to air nz flying club they might be able to help out on continuing...

Well done. I fly out there as well (currently with Colin Gittens). However I just rang to book my next lesson and was told they're not operating anymore. /unsure.gif style= vertical-align:middle emoid= border= 0 alt= unsure.gif />

IAS (Indicated) is not necessarily a "true" reflection of how fast an aircraft is moving through the air... hence TAS (True Airspeed). The barberpole is really the maximum TAS that you should be flying, but is shown as IAS, as that is all you have to reference on your instruments (talking steam powered here... I am pretty sure them flash computer driven ones can show TAS). At low altitudes, the IAS is pretty close to TAS (allowing for the various errors inherent in ASI's...). However, at higher altitudes, given the same TAS, the IAS is lower (the thinner air doesn't generate...

QUOTE (greaneyr @ Jul 5 2009, 07:37 PM) Perhaps the reason for selecting a -700 over an -800 has to do with its capactiy versus the required runway length? It still bodes well for those in smaller destinations. I think this is on the money. The difference is only about 40 seats, but I think that's still significant. 140 odd seats is a lot closer to, say, the capacity of Air NZ's 733s than the 180 odd seats the 737 800s have.

QUOTE (towerguy @ Jul 5 2009, 09:02 AM) our tickets to Raro and back stated A320 both ways but on walking out to the tarmac on the way home there was a nice shiny B767 - a nice surprise and much appreciated by everyone - especially all those bigger than a garden gnome! Yep, when we went there, I think we were meant to have a 767 on the way (which we got) and an A320 back, but we ended up on a 777! Have the ANZ 767's been fitted with winglets yet?

On 14 March 2006 I was flying "freedomair.com" (ANZsub) from NZDN to YMML. Top service, Top flight - only one problem. The weather was closing in with a fierce rainstorm and severe turbulences. The crew of the Airbus 320 had the choice of getting out of there as fast as possible or having to cancel the flight for the day. So all waiting passengers were rounded up into the departure lounge. As an Aussie my dormant recognition of urgent messages in Kiwi was not very well tuned, so I had to be called from the Cafe by name and rushed through the formalities on bord. We left 30 minutes...
