I seem to remember the early 707s had a fitting to carry an engine under the fuselage, for just this kind of thing. These days they probably just shove them in a 747F.

Yeah the C17 was never really going to be a contender...just too expensive to operate. The Kwaka would be a good compromise although it is things like supply of spares that is possibly an issue. Nearly every airforce has Hercs so parts would be plentiful especially out in the more remote regions.

I spotted on Flight radar off Auckland and white Island way.

I start another in the new year I look forward to that especially I am curious to see how Air New Zealand used DC-8s, 767s, and DC-10s for domestic flights within New Zealand or from New Zealand to island of Norfolk and back. Airnz Regional Maintance has the heavy maintenance contract with them, so I would assume that any end of lease/flying mainance would be carried out, and to save money on flying them back to park up somewhere in Oz, they got a good deal with that eairport company to park them in NSN.

Things are still chaotic for us. Yesterday's flight from RAR to SYD had to go thru TBU for fuel only to be told when they got there that there wasn't enough fuel so they had to go to AKL. Our flight tonight from RAR to LAX is planned via PPT to refuel. Hope we get some. Wouldn't it be terrible to be stranded in Tahiti :D

+1 I had the Captain Sim version with that cannon poking out the side. "Flying Fortress" would've been more apt on this one than the B-17 I reckon.
