Dunno about you guys, but that sort of descent rate with wings still attached seems unfathomable, if not impossible! Journalistic typo I would hope so - even so, 8000-SFC in 90 seconds is ridiculously quick also. The CAA sure has some investigating to do here........ Tragic loss, and I do indeed hope some sort of conclusion is drawn or lesson learnt from this circumstance, Joe.

And this, gentlemen, is why being a pilot is not a job but a privilege nowadays. I spent a lot of money for going to Switzerland for the Swiss Airline Pilot Screening. I did well, but was told to wait another 2 years. Becoming a pilot is not the best idea today, even at Swiss where you, if you get through, will be flying until your training has been paid. (off your payment of course) Lufthansa is the same story by the way, they keep recruiting, even though there are enough recruits until 2015. I think, this is a no brainer.

My mother and oldest brother suffer from this phobia, they shake before boarding, and look green the whole flight. It is really sad, i personally have to tell them it is all good there is not going to be a failure.

QUOTE (gojozoom @ Jun 6 2013,3:25 PM) If you would have stayed you might have had heard the true story of the Airtruck being used as the primary trainer for RNZAF in 1999, and the new Rolls-Royce jet engine development for retro-fitting into Cessna 152's... Did you know that an Airtruk was the first aircraft ever to land at the brand new AKL International Airport back in 1965 - true story !!

There has been at least 6 Staggerwings with NZ connections. At the moment there is a late model Staggerwing with a glass cockpit (!) in NZ owned by the late Eric Hertz. Link in the above post. There is also a recently restored (in NZ) dark blue Staggerwing with a Australian reg in NZ but this may have recently gone to Australia. Over the last 15 years or so the very similarly painted ZK MOE and ZK AMU were based in NZ but both have been sold overseas (one to Australia I think). As per Dougs post. At about the same time another very similar Staggerwing was (restored?) in NZ with a US reg...

With the countries d/budget the'd least aircraft to transport the NH if required in a hurry or go via HMNZS Canterbury , we'd probablely pickup the old RAF/RAAF or from another source of J s if anything ... can't see buying 400s also mean hanger rebuilds to keep staff changing the infastructure engineering bases to add to the bigger costing . For NZ coast they would need get water down P8s , the 295 is just to small and slow again for the area we cover .

There was a similar set of events a few weeks back in New Plymouth, when a kite surfer was reportedly swept out to sea. The local rescue chopper was sent up to look for him, although got called away to a more urgent situation further down the coast where a to a fisherman that had fallen off a cliff. The tower asked me to go search in the 182 jumpship, which we did for a good 20 or so minutes from the reported position, however it later turned out to be a false alarm thankfully! Someone thought they saw a green canopy being dragged out past the breakers, but there was no missing person...

I posted this years ago, at CBFS I think. Not a helicopter, but a good example of why you need to "check manually that mouth is open before inserting toothbrush" There is an element of slapstick comedy to it, but it was a very lucky escape.

Sorry for the late reply! Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the industry down south...or even outside of the then-WAW! I hope you were able to find out.
