The aircraft in the two pictures you asked about is a Yak-50. TAA is a 152 Aerobat, I've flown it a few times at the RNZAC competitions.

Great idea , and very well done. Had to laugh at one of the comments further down that page "For god's sake don't try to fly the thing...this is the only safe use of a Russian aircraft !!! A bit harsh i think .... now , the A380 would make a great hotel .

I was on an annual refresher course over the weekend and we had our new Manager Flight Operations come and have a chat. He was previously with CAA and prior to that CTC and made one interesting comment. Apparently there has been a large reduction in the number of people applying for pilot courses, the exact reason why isn't known but I guess we could speculate. I would like to think that the people getting into it now are the people who are genuinely interested in flying as a career.

Hm. With Jetstar, and other budget airlines, you pay far less precisely BECAUSE they are rigid in their enforcement of these rules. Booking any flight with them is a calculated risk. Granted, the incident with the shark was cold-hearted but not really the airline's fault.

Ive done probably around 100 hours in various models of R44s. The one thing I will say is that they are probably the best machine in that category for taking tourists around but they arnt a working helicopter. What I mean with that is that they are not designed to have a load underneath them, they are not designed to have spray gear mounted to them etc. It is a reality of the industry that this sort of thing goes on and with a good operator, they can be operated safely on aerial work operations but they arnt as robust as a JR.

FACT A bit about DME.... DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) Operates in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band 1041-1108 MHz (remember its around 1 GHz) **OPERATING RANGE = line of sight; 1,23 x (sq. root Transponder height + sq. root Receiver height) **ACCURACY (modern DME's) = ICAO recommends accuracy of less than the sum of 0.25NM plus 1.25% of the distance measured. interrogation 1041-1045 MHz response 978 - 1108 MHz DME is frequency paired with VOR and ILS. DME has X and Y channels (used for military operations) The difference between X and Y signals is the response-frequency of the...
