I recently bought FSX as well, but have been picking the brains of the guys here for the last few weeks or so. Here are some things you may or may not be aware of in FSX

There are many free graphic enhancement programs and there are many 'pay for' graphic enhancement programs. There is freeware addon planes and there are payware addon planes for FSX. The addon planes from some of the companies out there are extremely more in depth then the stock planes that come with FSX + Accelerate. Too many types of planes and software companies to list here. Just let them know what interests you and these guys will be happy to point you in the direction of great planes, be they payware or freeware.

Graphic addons seem to come in a few types. There are the type of programs that concentrate on a particular geographical area and massively increase accuracy and detail and just general beauty of that specific area. Some freeware stuff is here for you in this thread here at NZFF http://nzff.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=40 Some payware of this type is available here at NZFF http://nzff.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=12
There are also graphic improvements that address the auto generated scenery. This is not area specific and only affect generic graphics that FSX uses. There is some freeware of these and also a very up and coming payware one called VLC (Vector Land Class) which you can read up on here at NZFF http://nzff.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11747
Also on the topic of graphic improving there is a payware program called REX2 which takes weather and water to a new level in FSX.

Hmm, what else, well, tons really. The above is a quick and brief overview of a small part that is FSXing here in NZ smile.gif
Welcome aboard!

Edit: Oh, very important is how to install FSX. As you likely have only just installed it, it will be relatively painless to uninstall and reinstall if necessary. Details are here http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041
There is a TON of adjustments mentioned there, but the important part is hwo to install. As it outlines there it goes something like this, you need to install just FSX first, then get the game going, and load up the default flight. Then, shut down the program and reboot your PC. Then get out your expansion pack (Acceleration) DVD and then install it. Get the game going again and load up the default flight. Reboot again. It is something like that, but follow the instructions in that link and it will tell you the exact way to go about it.
Edit2: When I started posting here I had some weird default setting for how I viewed threads. The threads were presented in a collapsible format where you had to expand each subsequent post to read it. This can be adjusted in the top right hand corner of any post. You should be able to see it reading this post. You should see an "Options" drop down menu and set "Display Mode" to "Standard"

I would reinstall it as that thread suggests just to be sure. Later on if you decided to do it that way you will likely want to back up all you in game accomplishments and flight records. Right now those are very minimal and you really have nothing to lose by reinstalling. If you don't you may get those 'out of memory' error messages and whatever else comes with installing it any other way then that suggested one.
In the end it is your call of course. Personally I reinstalled simply for the peace of mind of not having to wonder if it would of been better to smile.gif

Let us know roughly what your specs are ... then we'll know what sort of performance you *should* be expecting. .. and could offer you advice accordingly ... there are dozens of tweaks, but the latest one or two have been quite significant, IMHO.

To nail my colours to the mast - I reinstalled my FSX *without* acceleration (I had a suspicion that it was causing me loads of problems). After leaving FSX on DX9 for ages, I switched to DX10 preview (but only after I was confident my favourite aircraft and sceneries supported it). Graphically, I think it's made a difference - not massive (I don't think) but worth it.

Other than that, I found that simply upgrading my system from that pig-dog of an o/s, Vista, to Win7 in 64-bit mode helped everything. *Everything* is more stable ... including FSX.

EDIT: PS. You'll find loads of tips - many conflicting. *Always back up your config files* so you can back-track For instance - many people swear by frequent defrags - or sophisticated defrag programs. I've tried them and it made no discernible difference - on my system at least. Maybe Win7 is better at disk access/management? Or maybe it's managing RAM better, so there's less disk access .. who knows!

whathesaid.gif It can't do any harm ... and at this stage - before you invest hours of work adding aircraft, scenery etc. etc. it's worth a try.

Always things to buy for your new addiction (FSX)
TrackIr http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/ is great addition. It makes your real time head movement move your view in game. So if you want to check over you left shoulder to see if you should turn for base just yet you can just by looking that way.
One of the many great companies that make addon plane. http://www.a2asimulations.com/ Have a look at the 5 videos for their new B-17G. They feature the first video on their home page, and once you watch that they have links for the next 4 on Youtube. Just to give you an idea of how in depth the various addon planes can be.

Always seems to be something to spend your cash on ....

Should be under simobjects/aircraft/ (there should be loads of them!). Do you mean the whole "WoP2_b17g" folder isn't showing in "simobjects/aircraft"? Did it install correctly?

Right-mouse click on the .cfg file ... select the "open with" option ... then select "Notepad" and tick the "always use ..." box. Next time, you should be able to just double-click straight into Notepad.

No rush to spend up big at first anyway, make sure you are enjoying the game and feel it will keep your attention for some time. I didn't follow my own advice and had a few moments of thinking to myself I could be buying too fast. In my first few days I got REX2, TrackIr pro 5, the Real NZ bundle plus Supercity, a joystick, a Catalina and a Twin Otter addon planes for payware. Adds up to a fair bit for starting out on a PC game in my books. However, I am happily addicted and feel I will get my money worth of enjoyment out of it and then some smile.gif

Oh, if you do not have Teamspeak 3 downloaded yet (freeware) and a microphone then I would suggest that if you like voice chatting with people online while flying. Am about to head off to work or would link the teamspeak connection details that are somewhere on these forums.
