Too many Commercial Jet Pilots?

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

I'm with the GA guys too. In my 5 years of flight simming I HAVE NOT FLOWN ANYTHING WITH A JET ENGINE. Not even the Learjet. I have no idea about any of the systems used on those big ones (like FMC).

I make GA flying busy and exciting with:

Bushflying (take off and landing from/to challenging airstrips)
Real-world weather with a good weather engine (REX)
FSPassengers
AirHauler
FS Flying School
Tons of good scenery
Online flying

I have to add, that I mainly use flightsim as a training aid for my PPL.

I go as big as I can operate correctly, No point flying a PMDG 747 unless you can fly it as you would in real life. It makes a huge difference having a good aircraft where systems are simulated correctly. Im currently having heaps of fun finding my way around the Captain Sim c-130 which is a great aircraft, large but still old school navigation techniques and you get to do all the systems management manually. Flight sim is dead boring unless you do things correctly, and then the fun is in the satisfaction of achieving it.

I think that weather GA or airliners you should make your best attempt to operate the aircraft correctly. Id fly the PMDG 747 if i knew how to use it, but i dont so i find it boring and downsize to what I do know.

The good thing about flight sim. is that it covers all tastes, from GA aircraft to the heavy jets, and from civil to military, fixed and rotary wing. Each to his own, and great that we have such a choice now. Flight simming has come of age, we can choose what makes us happy.

smooth landings.

Well, I kind of "switched" so to speak.

When I had FS9, I flew tubeliners almost all the time, and joined a VA until that became a little bit repetitive, filing
Pirep and stats etc etc. Mind you that phase gave me a good insight into IFR, thing like flying correct STARs and SIDs.
Also in those years FS9 looked OK from 10000ft but absolute c**p below that.
Then VOZ(Vista Australis) came along, improving textures somewhat, so i started doing lower level Ga stuff and
going online a bit.

Not long after switching to FSX, The ORBX(FTX) product swere released, then OZX started working its magic on the small
country fields , and that was it !!!. Hooked.!!Being able to get low n slow and still see crisp detailed scenery ( and mesh !!) transformed
the way I fly.

Plus installing a heap of better (Carenado,Realair etc) aircraft and flying online about 80% of my sim time, has made it
even more addictive.

As an expat K1w1, I cannot wait for the next gen of scenery for NZ to be released.

Cheers

I believe the enjoyment of VFR vs IFR depends a lot on what addons you have installed.

VFR in a default Aircraft across default scenery is about as exciting as watching grass grow.

But with demon GA addons like realair simulation's Beech Duke B60 or their Marchetti F-260 flying across Supercity Auckland to any of the small photoreal areas like Coromandel or Northland or Rotorua is just fantastic!!

Unfortunately at present there isnt as many scenery addon's available for NZ like there was on FS9 so I spend most my VFR time over megascenery's PNW and surrounding US States or ORBX-FTX's Australia, this makes VFR unbelievably real especially with Active skies X and Active skies graphics bringing the weather to life.

Addons like these can make IFR seem boring.

But if I do have the spare time? IFR can be equally exciting bringing the PMDG 744 into Los Angeles after a 12 hour long haul from Auckland into an extremely busy Vatsim ATC enviroment!!!
