New Thread on the forum

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Kelvinr » Sat Nov 16, 2013 4:12 pm

Hey,

I think it's time for a separation of FSX and Prepar3d on this forum. I do think there is justification for it otherwise we will remain in the past and mixing the sims will become confusing. I'd like to see this change which would be a milestone in itself right here as this forum has always leaned towards FSX.

Cheers,

K.

I have brought this up before many years ago - Think can also be said for both FS9 and Xplane , strangely in history and years gone past , many packed their bags and moved away cos back then FS9 ruled , I look at other sites and many have independent threads for such things and they are very empty , maybe with an expanded or branch of these different FSims will break away a core and people asking , maybe just an Icon for starters until we see some prominent screens and what not .

I think a couple of new icons should be made available now - P3D seems to be already far enough away from FSX to justify that, and X-Plane has seen a lot of new development in the past few months. Doug has already made P3D and X-plane welcome in the Screenshot Comp, which will help spread the word.
Not sure if completely separate threads are needed yet - it would increase the Admins' workload considerably - and I don't know how many members are up to speed on those two sims right now, to provide the high quality help that this forum provides for the other ones. How many people are using the new ones?
But, basically in favour - the more knowledge bases available, the better.

Yeah, purely thinking "we need to start somewhere" even if it is an icon to represent the welcome of P3D. As for support, I don't expect 5 star support here, that's why LM have their website forum. I'm more thinking about screenshots and videos, and addons that will all be specific to Prepar3d, where will we put them in here if there isn't a thread to accommodate them as we surely won't be putting them in the FSX thread, it wouldn't make sense.

I'm with you there - we already have an 'Announcements' thread, as well as an Aircraft one and a Scenery one and those plus a P3D or XPL icon will do for now.
But you are right, this is the future, and we should planning for it.

The factor is the base support , hells many are still trying to keep in touch with FSX little alone X then with a P3D , strange its been out for a few long years and all the advocates post little in screens in regard to payware scenery and payware aircraft .. the gestation is very slow in people showing it Greatnest .. all for a new accurate Flight Simulator .. be good to see what the muscle power and again what offers the casual simmer - some reason screens are still very limited across all forums .

I remember a time this forum leaned towards FS2004 and we had an exodus of FSXers laugh.gif Onwards and upwards though I say! Good idea to keep them separated and would be a sensible addition to the forum.

Yes, we were getting to the stage where NZFF was FS9-only, and ARNZ forum was FSX. If ARNZ hadn't had a problem with their forum it would have stayed that way, and NZFF would now be a retro holdout only...

Although it might make initial sense to have a specific Prepar3D sub-forum, it does need a lot of thought. There's no FS2004 or X-plane forums, you'll notice, which makes the FSX sub-forum a bit of an anomaly. From memory, it was created long-before FSX was released, to separate out the conjecture and what-ifs which happen with any new release, and some people get so upset by these that they don't like to see it mixed in with the normal posts. It should have really been closed when FSX was released, or renamed to something which makes it clear that it is specifically a sub-forum for discussion of anything pre-release.

The FS2004/FSX separation did in fact lead to the exodus which Alister mentions, and it would be a shame if that happens again. At the moment we already have a good set of sub-forums, all except the FSX forum catering for any and every sim, so you can easily slip a new simulator into any one of the first nine sub-forums.

Of course it does help to give some hint as to which sim you are talking about when you post. There are the 'Post Icons' to help with this, or you could just put something in the post title. (It drives me balmy on the FSDeveloper site when people post a development problem, and the first reply is always 'which sim?' If they made this clear in the post, then the first reply might just be the solution they need.)
