Brand new to FSX

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby fras444 » Thu Sep 11, 2014 9:13 pm

Hey good evening, after starting of with FS95 many years ago when I was 9... (haha Chicago meggs quickly became strangely like home.. Imagine a 9 year old kid pointing out when seeing that famous black building on tv ... "Hey! That is Chicago you can tell because of that big black building and the airport is just down there..!!!" ) Anyway...
I have eventually got hold of almost every FS out there over the years peaking with the amazing FSX... After getting really into it and researching adware for this game I ended up losing the disk to FSX.. Four years later and seeing so many great photos and videos online of what you can do, I decided to bite the bullet and I have now just got myself a new one smile.gif
My home town is Rotorua and I would love to know if there is an updated Rotorua airport incl the new runway extension and new parking....? if not how do I go about getting one or how would I do that myself...? brand new again to this and would love to fly around NZ with NZ aircraft and not the generic AI and just in general... How do I go about making this FS feel like home.... Where do I start

Thank you so very much for any help... Oh and sorry if this question sounds generic es if something like this has been posted many times before on this forum

Hey Fraser, welcome to NZFF mate, hope you enjoy your stay thumbup1.gif

Re Rotorua, one of our resident members Robin has a wealth of top quality payware titles for FSX, one of which covers Rotorua. It's very nicely done and well priced, am an owner of it myself along with pretty much all of Robin's other titles. It was released a few years back so dont think it will include the extension, but you never know he may have plans for an update... For some reason it's not available on his own website but you can purchase at SimMarket following...

Oh, and he has a dedicated sub-forum area following where you might want to follow up...

Welcome, I joined recently and had similar simming experience over the years... a very knowledgeable group here that can advise and direct you to great sources of info.
For AI, I have installed a freeware called World of AI. This can give you the vast majority of NZ airliner flights if you are into tubeliners rather than VFR...

Hey thank you all for the good old kiwi welcome New_Zealand_etc.gif and making me feel home biggrin.gif haha my partner read your post, she laughed and said you have a new family now and that she has all but conceded herself to losing me forever to fsx and this forum and is regretting gifting this bloody game to me haha.
Well I spent the whole day today setting up this game and learning how to bloody set up that ADE to work... angry.gif the whole googling why it wont let me compile, learning that the SP1 is on the Accelerate disk and learning that I do not have ultimate control of my very own laptop when it wouldn't let me add the updated scenery to the addon scenery location.... rolleyes.gif but now its all been fixed and enjoying the editing... gave Rotorua the much needed DIY the 2304 meter runway and the two A320 gates... and.. gave the somehow forgotten Gissy the much needed parking gates and my partner has very kindly let me BUY... biggrin.gif and download the Orbx North Island scenery... how is it....? does it have the airports all updated? and have downloaded the freeware NZ AI man its so cool to be flying with non generic AI so much like home now I think this chair is going to get a very well worn grove haha bye bye social life plane.gif Just like getting back on the bike after four whole years since I last played this amazing game no.... Simulation biggrin.gif little bit of oh f&^k what button is it to open the doors and raise the spoilers? but its all come back to me!!
Thanks heaps all you guys for sending me in the right direction! The round is on me at the Taupo airport cafe, when you fly into Taupo..... on FSX of course... tongue.gif no jokes hit me up if you're in taupo in physical form!!!

Yep, all of them. The NZNI update will include the extended runway for NZRO.

Rotorua now has two A320 gates? Is that stand 5 and 6?

Sweet I cant wait the damn wireless cut out when I was 2.23 gigs in and now back at 1.3GB and decided to go with the download manager thing that they suggested haha. Two 737-300 gates I should say... Having a look at google maps and how 5 and 6 are set up shouldnt be too much trouble getting two A320s in.. Thats how they planned it from memory when I followed the whole drama at school...

Sweet cheers for that mate I just downloaded the Australian/Oceania AI and the add ons to that package its like a breath of fresh air from what I was flying with in the days of the generic AI

Haha yeah man and the whole grey out when flying through those square boxes.. I actually prefer flying through those clouds than the ones on FSX it seems to be all over in a second. (no shape in the aircraft.. a single surface facet) Yeah man and the landing gear on the cessna disappearing in the fuselage oh and NZs' token inclusion. I remember getting that game for our very first computer win95. We were picking it up and spotted this thing out of the corner of my eye that unmistakable image of a aircraft tail Flight Simulator for window 95 and literally begging dad to get it for me. I asked the guy at the shop about the game and how to play it and he said that you have to work your way up from the cessna to the big planes and to bigger airports tacking years.. rolleyes.gif spent a whole month to realise that you could just change your aircraft and the airport. But I learnt Chicago like the back of my hand!!! where to turn for the finals just after those three orange buildings.... and within no time I very quickly out grew it and yeah all the rest started popping up, newer and better versions to the ultimate version FSX and literally the whole world in the palms of your hands and without the 2500NZD return ticket punk.gif

And so it begins... there is a great weather engine called Activesky Next that generates better clouds and simulates actual weather in limited areas eg AA, WN, CH, and then interpolates out across the rest of NZ. And then all the freeware and payware Aircraft and scenery, control yokes and rudders and on it goes... after a while you will realise that a 2500NZD return ticket was the cheaper ( but definitely not better ) option.

It is bloody funny what some off the shop keeper and counter boys come out with .... the box art was the worst one tho .... for to show extra detail and it was only FS2000 that it started to equal the cover the extra buildings and details.

Enjoying being back in FSX, bit like not riding the bike for four years but its all coming back to me. The North Island package is amazing!!! Been flying the Air NZ routes with the Air NZ Dash 8-300 cant seem to find a decent Air NZ b1900.. Was wondering about the real world weather..? Been raining outside here in Taupo but been fine in FSX with real weather selected..???
