I blather on about things FS9 because I happen to run it more than any other.
But things move on, so I was interested to hear how users spend their time nowadays.

Oops this was going to be a poll...
Maybe a mod could install choices for FS9/FSX/X-Plane please?

When I'm at university and on my weaker computer, I use FS2004.
When I'm home for some weekends and holidays, I use FSX.

FS2004 set up:

VOZ 1.8 North Textures
Roads & Rivers of NZ
Freeware 75M mesh
RealNZ Tauranga + Rotorua
Numerous freeware airports from Lawrie Roach and others.

FSX set up:

VLC
RealNZ Tauranga + Rotorua

AI for both sims:
World of AI
New Zealand GA traffic package
RNZAF Package 1 (non-air show/non-fictional)

FSX...I was using both, but when my PC blew its GPU I just couldnt be bothered loading all my FS9 stuff back to bring it back to its former glory, plus the new GPU bought FSX to life.

FSX seems to suit my flying in any case ...GA & Warbird VFR flying in enhanced rural areas (VLC, Orbx)....no doubt if I was a tube flyer in built up areas I would still be using FS9 as the low FPS in FSX would be game stopper for me.

Edit: Ok Poll is up - will be interesting to compare with a similar older poll

Futher edit:
System: 4400 AMD Dual - ASUS-9800GT 1GB - 3GB RAM - WinXP
FSX:
A few payware GA and warbird aircraft (Carenado, Lotus, Ants, Sibwings and Realair) and a few freeware
VLC
Most of FSX Real NZ - Auckland is only one I dont have
Orbx PNW and a few of their airports (payware and freeware)
AI = Orbx/FTX AI, GNZLAP

I still use both , mainly use FSX , but for a story line and ability to run many different for a story line , FS9 is handy to have .

Thanks for setting up the poll, Paul - I'd hazard a guess at maybe 2:1 in favour of FSX now?

Sean that's a nice concise layout descriptor so I'll pinch it, thanks:

Generally my favoured sim is FS9, but I dip into FSX to have a looksie at those "special" planes or whatever, from time to time.
FS2004 set up:
Contains everything known to man...240GB last count, plus all those zipfiles
There might be some Nav addons missing but not much.
I added Active Sky the other day, and I am addicted all over again...
System:
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-E SLI Socket 775 nVidia nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.4GHz Conroe 1066MHz FSB 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 RAM: G.SKILL 2GB kit (1GB x 2) DDR2-800 (PC-6400) CL4-4-4-12 F2-6400CL4D-2GBPK Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 HDD: 2 x 500GB + 1TB Ext backup Sound: Sound Blaster X-Fi Monitor 1: Dell 24" Monitor 2: Dell 19" OS: WIN XP Home

FSX set up:
Nothing pertaining to NZ really, but VLC looks mighty tempting.
I have a couple of Godzone carryovers, but no AI and no native planes to use here.
Tell a lie, I have Ants' Moth.
Most of my other FSX scenery addons, like Switzerland Pro, came with both FS9 and FSX installs.
System:
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro Intel P45 ICH10R EPU CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E8600 OC to 4.0GHz Wolfdale 45nm 1333MHz FSB 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Dual Core Processor (Water cooled) RAM: G.SKILL 4GB kit (2GB x 2) DDR2-800 (PC-6400) CL4-4-4-12 PI series Heat Spreader Graphics: 2 x ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E 2.0 CrossFire Ready Video Card in CrossFire HDD:300GB WD Raptor + 620GB WD Sound: 7:1 Onboard Monitor Samsung 19" OS: WIN 7 Pro 32 bit

Should be interesting this one. And I hope for everyones sake it doesnt turn into a tiresome debate :-)

I spend probably 90% of my flying time in tube-liners and about 50% of that in NZ/Oz, the rest
in Europe and North America. For me its therefore more about enroute and airports and given
that until recently there have been so many more FS9 airports, meshes and landclass files
I've tended to stick with FS9. However w VLC out now I'm starting to take much more interest
in VFR low-n-slow so will be drifting time-wise to FSX over coming months.

System: ASUS P5K-SE m/b - E8400 Core2Duo - ASUS-9600GT - 4GB DDR2/800 - WinXP
FS2004 set up:
hundreds of freeware aircraft, airports, meshes, landclasses
dozen or so payware commercial and GA aircraft
Christians 20m mesh and roads-n-rivers
Robins NZ fs2004 collection
gazzilions of AI (some downloaded, some hand-cut)
FSX set up:
a handful of payware commercial and GA aircraft
Robins NZ FSX collection
VLC

YES , Dean is right , its not a competition , the best explanation is why you use , both are as good as each other , recent freeware release sky textures for FS9 so you guys would be blown away ! myself - due to the many years off FS9 , in a history subject this program is fantastic because many FS8-2002 models work in it and many FS Combat Sim s . Superb for a history lesson ! cool.gif

Edit : Look at the NZFF header , Alister 'Albatross' Curnow Scored a direct hit using FS9 ! thumbup1.gif

Yeah agree no slugfest here necessary...
Following Dean's post, I edited mine above to show system as well, might be interesting to see what folks are running in Oct 2010.

I'm disappointed to see the lack of support for X-Plane. Not because I use it myself (hangs head in shame) but because it seems to be about the only sim out that that is in ongoing development. Yes I know the new Flight Sim from Microsoft is on the way, but I can't help but think that they'll go where the dollars are (and good on 'em), which is probably not in our end of the market. FSX is dead from a developer's point of view (or will be in a couple of years), so...

Was hoping there would be someone out there who would jump up and say..." GET X-PLANE!" but not many users in evidence.

Have a good friend who installed this recent , he work at Dicky S , mentioned it sit in the mid range 2002/04 app,s , with adjustment can put most off those scenery in from FS9 but for a history lesson it would be lacking from the MS product in regards to the aircraft type .

I'm FSX Gold only, VFR for now but interested in other formats later, using following enhancements:
- VLC
- All RealNZ scenery
- Mike's CHCH, Northland & Abel Tasman (and Hamilton / Napier when he's done them)
- All airports / free scenery available via AvSim and other sites, incl FS9 Napier Airport (which kills my frame rates something fierce)
- REX
- Real World Trees 2 (but not installed at mo - is broken for some reason)

My rig (home-built, of course cool.gif ):
Case / PSU: iCute ZL02-3G-BB Case with front USB / Audio incl 2 x 120mm / 1 x 80mm Fans with rubber mounts plus Acbel M8 750 750W Energy Efficient Switching Power Supply w/ Active PFC & 4 x +12v, CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6750 2.66GHz CPU, Socket LGA775, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB L2 Cache (Stock Cooler), Motherboard: Asus P5QL PRO Socket LGA775 ATX Intel Motherboard, Video Card: PowerColor AX57701GBD5-H HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 128-bit PCI-E 2.1 HDMI Video Card, RAM: Patriot PSD22G8002 2GB DDR2 800MHz PC2 6400 CL5 RAM x 4 (Total 8GB), Hard Drives: Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Cache SATA2 HDD, Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA2 HDD, WD 80GB 8MB Cache SATA2 HDD, Sound Card: Creative SB0790 Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Sound Card, Windows: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

I need tree's, valleys, mountains and ridges lots of em and little weird and wacky spots to land on.
I am a VFR bush flyer Fixed and rotor.

Mostly payware GA bush/back country airline types.
Most of RealNZ collection
Assorted freeware stuff
VLC
Active Sky Evo with REX2 and EZdock for a touch of realism.
AI is WOAI and GNZLAP Redux with HTAI models (not that I have AI active very often as bushing is pretty much an isolation type of flying)
and a heap of over seas commercial scenery.
Most favorite area to fly in, Alaska and BC

My system.

I Need Trees , with the clouds and the Terrain , When i get the task to Autogen an area , i go in planting and placing to the MAX! , the large city , many many months and to watch it grow , today we get good photo real , current the new city town areas Wanganui and course Christchurch , my home town , many other parts blending in with VLC . it is looking so great . FS9 i have always believed the same , the maximum number of tree and cloud , it is that part that makes you feel you are flying in a true Virtual world .

Excellent Poll to see who uses what!... biggrin.gif ...!

I have both FSX and FS 2004, (and FS '98, and FS 2000 and FS 2002!), on my HDD, but I only ever use FS2004, for all sorts of reasons, but mainly because it can be used with my copy of FS Navigator!

Without FS Nav, I would have abandoned the MS Flight Sims 10+ years ago!

(Vital for Multiplayer Flights with other Pilots).

Using FSX means I have to reduce many of my important settings, which makes the flight experience less enjoyable than my FS 2004 with all my settings at max!

I am surprised that there seem to be so few of we happy FS 2004 Simmers in NZ!

I have added so many nice bits and bobs to my FS 2004 over the years, that I am emotionally attached to it now... laugh.gif ...!

Paul....FS 2004 Rules. The King is dead...Long live the King... thumbup1.gif ...!

My ancient bits for running FS 2004 flat-out:
Fozzer's bits:
Desktop case. Homebuilt.
Motherboard: Gigabyte. GA7-N400 S-L. Socket A. AGP.
Processor: Socket A. AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred 2600+ MMX. (2.1 GHz).
Graphics: AGP. n-Vidia Winfast 7800GS 256 MB.
Memory: 2 GB. DDR 400.
Power: 700 Watt. Storm PSU.
Sound: Creative Labs. Soundblaster 1024 Live!
Monitors: 2-off. Philips 17" 170C.
..and a Petrol Lawn Mower...for those grass air strips..

I want to run X-Plane. Seeing as I'm now on Mac but X-Plane 10 looks promising so I think I'll wait a couple of months.
For now its FS9...

Did you have to use Boot-camp or similar to partition your HDD to load Windows, or do you have a Windows PC still for FS9? If you are running Windows on yr Mac, what ver (XP, Vista, 7, 32 or 64)? And if yes, did you have any issues getting it all to work? Would be interested to know. smile.gif

Wow, the results weren't what I was expecting, but I really shouldn't be surprised. Time marches on!
As a long term simmer I still use FS9 most of my simming, mainly thanks to FSNav (totally the same reasons as Fozzer) and various paywares I have purchased over the years. Plus my aging computer runs it better. So since 80% of my flying is in airliners IFR, I might as well be in FS9. Can't see the ground anyway!
However, I still really love FSX for certain things. And now "WOW" with VLC I won't fly GA in NZ ever again on FS9 - well maybe just in the Aeroworx King Air laugh.gif
While I do have a very modest system, I can still get enjoyment from both sims and am happy to have both flyable.

Intel Core 2 Duo 6400, 4gb RAM, 7950GT 512mb GFX, FS9.1, FSX Gold + Acceleration.

I voted FSX..Why?

Many things and could write a whole essay on them however my main reason is due to the graphics and special effects. These just can't be beaten by FS9... I still don't mind FS9, I use it every time I'm at work which has got a good setup with FS9 but I just think FSX is unbeatable

My machine is pretty standard too: Just have a quad core 2.66ghz which has been overclocked to 4.12ghz..4gb ram..geforce GTS 250 and W7.
