The weather is not looking good for the weekend....I don't care about the rain, but if the cloud base will be low, they cancel the majority of the displays....I'll go anyway, at least for a good talk with other aviation enthusiasts.

I'm seriously considering a kitplane, but I want to hear some opinions from the pro's before I make a step...

Firstly Wairarapa... the weather is favouring Sunday at the moment. Forcasts are showing overcast but the NW wind may be the real problem. The wind (at this stage) may be less on Sunday. I'm doing a day-trip with mates from Taupo. We will decide which day tomorrow lunch time.

Roll on Omaka!!! Oh sorry, a tad premature!!! Guess who has been offered 6 nights accomodation over Easter 1/2 hour away!!!

OK - kitplanes.
What do you want to do in it, with how many people (oh... that sounds dodgy)?

I know a few people that own / built / fly a small single for fun but hire the club plane when needing seats. The bigger the machine, the cost of not just the machine but the hangar increases. Many hangars at larger fields cost $3-5K a year. That is a lot of flying. A small homebuilt may be able to share a hangar...

If money isn't a problem, then do you like wood, composite, tube / fabric or aluminium? Do you already have some tools or know who to steal off?

I've been asked to be a possible build partner of a Sonex by a friend who knows I can't afford one... but wants me to become a partner through building while he (who has a lot of spare $$$) will pay for it. I just need a few spare hours now and a cleaner shed.

Just a few little things to think about...

Oh yeah, go for it!!!

Pete

I'll be going. Taking my aviation mad 16 year old.

Had a ball last time, especially after winning the Mustang ride over Wellington!

Looking at Saturday at the moment but may be able to change days (already bought tickets, train as well).

Hope to see some of you there. . . plane.gif

Thanks for your useful input Pete,

Even if Wairarapa has nothing to do with kitplanes, I'll answer your questions here. I actually know exactly what I want to build, but I didn't put much effort into deciding how, or where I want to build it. The reason for that is: I was offered a new position from February, which will have a major impact on my financials, so I put these plans on hold, until my financial future clears out a bit.

The plane is a Zenithair CH750 (Very similar design to the Pelicans I saw on TradeMe). I have a plan of becoming a mission pilot one day (in the far far future), so I'd focus on bush flying after receiving my PPL (hopefully in 2011).
The best thing about this, is that you buy as you build. For the ones not so familiar with the process, you can buy different parts of the plane in separate packages (tail, wings, avionics, engine, etc). The final cost of the plane would be somewhere around 85-90k. This specific plane can be built in about 700-800 hours. As I said, I haven't done any investigation about hangar availability and cost, therefore the numbers you provided are most useful to me. I also understand, that there are a lot of supercubs and other bush planes around, that I could hire, instead of pouring money into a 1-2 year project, but the idea of building my own, and knowing every rivet of it, is very tempting. Probably, this won't be anything more than a dream, but I'd still like to know the facts in case I have an opportunity.

Again, sorry for the side-tracking guys, see you in Masterton!

Dan

Favourite NZ aerobatics team returns to the skies

The Air Force's Red Checkers aerobatics team are taking to the skies this weekend for the annual Wings over Wairarapa in Masterton, for the first time since the death of their squadron leader last year.

The planes were grounded following two incidents within a few months, one of which claimed the life of pilot Nick Cree.

Hi guys,

Did any of you make the decision about going Saturday or Sunday? It seems that Sunday will have more rain but less wind, and I have no idea which "configuration" would allow for more displays to be run.

By belly up, do you mean gear up, or belly up as in like a dead goldfish?

Hope it didn't get to much damage.
