Hi all,

Just bought myself a Piper Cub RC Plane- 3 channel (rudder, elevators, throttle) and have been advised to practice with a RC simulator (thanks for the tip Alister!)

Can anyone link me to a good one? I remember seeing one being displayed at Wanaka airshow a few years back... free/demo would be ideal.

Cheers!

I saw one recently in Australia while visiting.

If you have no joy send me a PM and I think I can track down it down but will take a few emails to locate
the person who had it on his "lappy." Seemed pretty realistic - i.e. easy to prang, and had a selection
of planes to use.

I have used this one for a few weeks, as I borrowed it and a usb controller from a workmate. So cool!

This is the basic version, but it's all you need to learn to fly, or practice your skills on. It's quite uncanny how real it feels, especially with the photo scenery background. If you have a usb connected flight controller you are set.

Check out the youtube video on that link.

What Tx do you have? (your remote controller) if its half decent you can buy software and the appropriate cable to suit. If not some of the kits on trademe that come with a Tx that is very basic but gives you the idea, and as long as its the same mode as your one used with the cub then its fine. Are you using mode 1 or 2? (throttle left or right stick)
I have a program called Phoenix which is very good, alot of fun to use.

I use FMS. It is free and helps with th emotor skills and sorting out your lefts and rights when the aircraft is coming towards you.

Got one here , good on ya Andy cool.gif , lotta fun on Christmas day with it , used a foam mattress as as the takeoff platform .. Rick my bro called it the aircraft carrier , his kids loved the mornings flights

Tip here , when flying it dont simply hold back on the stick to climb or turn , quick repeats on the control to make it respond , one thing i was going to do is make a larger wing to make more docile for training .

I would also highly recommend checking out Realflight. I am using Realflight G5.5 at the moment, and it is really pretty amazing. Great practice for real world model flying !

Here is a video I made of me flying some aerobatics (You may need to watch it on youtube to be able to see the plane properly, it gets rather small viewing on here tongue.gif ) . Might show you some of the graphics / physics thumbup1.gif

Cheers

Opinions on the best RC flight simulator will be as varied as the best FS addon!! ohmy.gif I've pretty much tried them ALL over the years - the main ones being Phoenix RC, the 'Realflight' series, Reflex XTR, Aerofly Pro Deluxe and 5, FMS.....

FMS is a free and easy way to start getting your hand/eye co-ordination sorted provided you have a simulator cable to connect your transmitter - just don't expect any fancy aircraft, scenery or flight physics!!

Like H500Fan above, I ended up sticking with Phoenix RC as they provide free upgrades for the software, aircraft and scenery - they also offer a free demo!!

Hope this helps....
Mat

@Ian, one of the cool scenery's that came with the sim. Not sure where in the world it is, but it sure would be cool to have that as a backyard wouldn't it! winkyy.gif

As mfraser said above, there are a huge number of sims out there. All having their own pro's and con's. I guess one thing they all have in common is that after practice on a sim, there will hopefully be less dings and bits of firewood at the end of a days model flying! laugh.gif

Cheers guys, I've been using the demo versions of ClearFlight and PRE Flight, as well as the latest version of FMS, although as you said Mat, the model dynamics feel terribly unrealistic. Downloading the Phoenix demo but unsure if it will actually run on my laptop ohmy.gif

I've been in contact with a few locals who fly RC down at the local park and am hoping to team up with an instructor via a buddybox handset for some training when the weather improves.

Here's a pic of the Cub for anyone interested. Might try add a custom paintjob and rego to it once I learn how to fly it!

The Hobbyzone Cubs are suppose to good for leaning, so great choice....might get one myself someday to replace my PT-40 which unfortunatley hasnt flown for quite a while.

Ive used AeroFly Pro Deluxe RC sim in the past and found it pretty good! Useful for learning, especially with the RC helos. I've got a Pheonix II powered glider RC aircraft and have put it up in a few trees the first few times... Its been tough to find a clear sunny day here of late with no or very little wind... The foam planes are not too easy to fly in even light breezes at times.

Had my first successful flight today. Another guy who was at the park with a RC Corsair did a demo flight for me then handed me the controls and talked me through a takeoff from a cricket pitch crease. Had a good few minutes flying then let him land it for me. Good times so far smile.gif

Cool Andy cool.gif , all my landings so far have been crash landings in the vast oceans off grass in 8/10 inch swells not a chance to put down on our Mattress Class Aircraft Carrier biggrin.gif
