NZFF

An interesting spin-off from people wanting to use screencomp pics on their desktop ...

I'm sure 99.99% of us here couldn't care less, but I wonder what the official NZFF ruling on this is? When someone like Gavin posts his (incredible) pics, he usually has some watermark - and I think we all respect that it's his living, so we'd be careful to protect that. But what about our own (non-commercial) offerings?

I think I'd be a bit miffed if I found some of my screenies appearing on *other* boards or sites. Naturally, I'd be delighted for anyone on NZFF to use them, as we're all "family" here ... but I wonder whether the protocol is to *ask*?

I work on the airliners.net theory for usage of photos found in a publically accessable, free environment on the internet (ie I do not have to pay for access to this forum, nor do we have a restricted access so only a select few may view the content)

Well the story was: I ripped off Ian's excellent avatar of the moment, and added the "on fire" bit.
This could've gone badly, but the Wing Commander came straight back, made a new avatar, ripped off my ripoff, and added it to his signature!
No possible argument there...

Generally I have found a quiet PM is more than enough to steer an argument of copyright.
(Psst...anyone want to buy a genuine early Adamski?)

EDIT:
In this month's screenshot contest, I have ripped off Gavin Conroy's aerial photography, the composition is very near identical to the photo - on purpose.
On top of that, I copied and pasted 5 elements from his photo into the screenshot (within the contest rules...can you spot them?)
Since it is all in the NZFF family so to speak, I'm sure he won't object (I wouldn't take it outside this forum perhaps).
If it were my work, I'd be flattered that someone saw fit to copy it.
But if Gavin objected, I'd simply remove it.

I have to addmit that I'm a big fan of Bugdani's screen shots and have them asigned to a windows theme.

Hey all. If you're seriously interested in adding some protection or conditions of use to your screenies, do take a look at CreativeCommons, it's what I use for my photographs, has flexible and understandable (something of a miracle in the licensing world) options, terms and definitions:

@Andrew - I have to agree .. Bug's pics are worth putting up on your living room wall, let alone your desktop!!

@Charl - I did spot the "uncanny resemblance" at the time. I don't see that as ripping off Gavin's pic as such - just a good natured spoof.

As ever, there's no point making a rule (or passing a law) that's impossible to implement. I just wondered about the proper, "polite" way of honouring peoples' efforts.

Frankly I'd be flattered if anyone used my shots for anything.

Im not sure....i put a lot of work into my screens, and i think if i found them some place else, with some one else claiming credit i would be a little peed off. But i guess thats the nature of the beast....you put them on an open forum, so deal with it.
Ive always asked if i can use, modify.....whatever a picture or shot. Gavin was very obliging when i asked about "stumpying" a few of his photos.....but you have to ask.

What I have been told in my photographic forums, Under current international copy write law anything you post write down or generally create is instantly covered under the "Attribution" type license. Then it is up to the author to alter the license restrictions by what ever means he wishs.

Now what I have written here is actually legally "Attribution" without making any claim or using ©. you can use it to what ever means you wish as long as I am given credit. (if it is bullshit then I dont expect any) And using this bit here in the quote covers that "QUOTE (Bob The Builder @ Jun 7 2011,1:25 AM)"

Now if I was to paste an image direct from my picassa online album that is by default "Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works" into this forum and if the forum has no copyright statement it degrades to "Attribution" unless I clearly define my copyright license. If I was to just link to that photo I am still protected by "Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works".

If I was to post something with a watermark on it like © xyz.com you would have to rip off over to xyz.com and seek out my license terms and if it was "all rights reserved" then that means even posted here that image is fully protected.

Clear as mud......... cool

Thanks for posting that - It does make sense, I think!

So ... it's theoretically possible that NZFF could add a clause to their registration/sign-up agreement that could clarify copyright - and therefore over-ride any individual copyright? Basically, you sign away your copyright on joining?

Along the lines of ... "you join this forum and anything you post here is free for anyone to use, abuse, pass on, sell for mega-bucks etc." ... or, conversely ... "all content posted here remains the copyright of the original owner and breaches of such on pain of death"

I'm not suggesting for one moment that anything like that needs to be implemented here - I'm just curious as to how it works.

It would be pointless putting that in the signup/registration as there are so many just "surfers" out there.

As I said your image is already copyrighted under Attribution, if you wish to protect it further just put under it "These images in this post are copyright all rights reserved" you are protected. done deal....... Proving and winning the fight, different story.

There was an image I produced back in Sept 05 that set the "firefox one hand on keyboard" brigade on fire. The image was a rendition of a T Shirt with the firefox logo, it has gone wildfire with many taking the credit, even to the point of someone saying he/she was the girl and modeled for it with different browser logos. If you look closely the other 3 images do not match the original. It has pissed me right of, I cant do anything about it... do I want to, not now. But I my wife and friends even my oldest daughter who watched me do it know it was me. Thats enough.

I use deans awesome cresco , with VLC and add on scenery not to mention a skin from Simviation???, take the pic and put it in the comp.

I would have to ask all authors permission to use it in the comp if I was to win a commercial prize????, If thats the case the prize would have to be shared by me and all authors, a copy each perhaps LOL.

Anyone wanna go into colaborate for screenshot comps HAHHA!

I,ve had a few ask for the fullsize shots for their wallpaper heaps a times, I feel gobsmacked when they ask and flattered, feel free ALL , to use them anytime , Anywhere.

Noooo ... I think you got that a bit wrong, grasshoppa ;-) I don't mean you'd have to ask permission for every component of your pic (aircraft, scenery, etc.) - its there to be used. I mean copyright of the *image* that anyone may create.

If you used a screenie as your own desktop, that's be fine (though it'd be polite to ask - and would make the creator chuffed) ... but creating (say) an FSX splash screen from it then uploading that to another site ...
