What to get next...

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Naki » Fri Sep 02, 2011 2:39 pm

Have small amount of money to spend but cant decide...have narrowed down to either:

Another Orbx PNW scenery (Diamond Point or Fall City)
REX (still not convinced I need it)
Flight 1 BN Islander
Baytower RV-7
Realair Turbine Duke

Advice?

REX will make over runway textures, taxiway textures, aircraft lights, airport lights, coralreefs, sunglare and various hues and water textures. Oh yeah, nearly limitless cloud sets as well. (alot in HD to) Basically and entire FSX facelift.

FEX just weather i believe. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

FEX is HD clouds water and maybe one day a weather engine as the TAB is coded there ,i just download the grass and runway stuff from REX site which is free ,from what ive seen the two are close but i feel "opinion"the FEX set always looks better compared to REX screen shots ..
Taupo is almost there ..

+1 for the Real Air Duke. Really fun to fly- like a 1900 but smaller kinda thing. Crazy fast with awesome performance. Very realistic too.

Weeell, you could always go for a cheapo retro flingwing such as the Virtavia Apache Longbow currently on special at PC Aviator for US$17, (unfortunately it is a bit light on features compared to some of the ND/ Aerosoft/ Cera offerings...)

I'm also pretty happy with the COTS B377 (yes Ian, I gave in and bought it in the end! biggrin.gif ), most of my big trips are in that now thumbup1.gif

Out of your list I would get the REX. I use it with ASE (better weather engine IMPO) and it enhances everything, including better FPS than default on my rig

To add my 2 cents worth REX would at the top of the list. Why? because you use it every time you boot FSX up regardless of what you are flying. Can't comment on FEX because I've never had it.

Cheers Paul

Thanks for feedback

I've made my choice..bought REX 2. I have way too many aircraft at the moment so I need to fly what I have. At least with REX I will be using it everytime I open FSX. Will get BN Islander eventually. Also Taupo has shot to the top of the list of must gets.

Massive download and install. Seems very comprehensive, perhaps over the top with what I do in FSX but it was cheaper than FEX. Having some issues which I need to sort through but initial impressions are very positive and there does seem to be reasonable framerate improvement (which has put off any ideas of upgrading the PC for now).

Some screenies coming!

Once you have REX (don't know anout FEX) you cannot contemplate flying without it, - it adds so much once you get the hang of some of the settings. It never gets old, - I'm always looking out the window and going "OMG this is so realistic".

I remember a few versions ago when clouds used to look like anvils hanging in the sky... I'm so glad those days are gone.

Think this topic needs to be deleted and started again , so many new items to temp the punters , still see the old muzzie sitting in the wings , with A2A s 51 on the way , that must hit the top off the list!
