Hi guys,

I thought it would be interesting to share our most embarasing FS moments, solo or online, they make for good yarns.

Mine is quite recent when my mate, who is new to online flying, and I decided to try shared cockpit in FSX, and since we were going from Dunedin to the icebergs we chose the DeHavilland Beaver DHC2 so we could land and take a closer look.

B) So, heres Joe cool pilot showing his mate how you REALLY fly one of these baby's, sitting on the active at NZDN in VC view throttling up but were not moving...hmm , have I got slew on? No, no slew..., did you touch anything you shouldnt have mate? No, hands off at this stage watching the 'pro', am I paused? Check, nope not paused, whats going on?

*goes to spot view*, oh, the Beaver aint got no wheels, only pontoons...opps

Hehehe, hmm thats a tough one, I have had so many.

Crashing people into mountains (only happened once!) while vectoring them isn't a great look...
My gear collapsing on me while on a flynet flight, costing the company 70 odd million dollars and taking the rating right down 20 points wasn't great either...

Thats all I can think of at the moment

I have taxied to 16 instead of 34 on Vatsim with a lot of traffic around, but my most memorable stuff up involved getting 02 and 20 at CH mixed up.... I was sure rw20 was hdg 20, atc was very polite, and refrained himself from going as far as to call me a dumbass.

touching down, forgetting to lower the landing gear is always embarrasing especially after a long journey. or not putting enough fuel into the aircraft. or flying into terrain. or trying to fly an instrument approach, entering the navagation frequency but forgetting to switch it to active, then getting lost. or taking 2 minutes to try and land a helicopter on a building.

My most embarasing thing happend not long ago: I had flown NZAA-NZCH in a 733, I was on vatsim and NZWN_CTR was active, I was flying the approach. I got to short final, My frame rates were a grand total of 7 (as with most apps). I was about 100ft up, just a little low on the gs and both my engins cut out. I had the flynet client running... There was no way I was gana make it so with a controller sitting there watching I paniced and pressed "y" to try and make it look as if I flew a normal landing. Sadly the flynet client will only let you engaed slew for a few seconds so I had to try and do it in hops to the ground (it didnt occur to me jsut to slew upwards) I ended up slewing myself in a 90degree turn (still with under 7fps) and hitting the ground.

I am unsure weather that was from running out of fuel or if the flynet client cut my engins..

Second most embarising was when I stalled my 172 over top of NZAA during a fly in (my steady 5fps didnt help the situation) the couldn't understad the controller and it was my 2nd online IVAO flight! lol That was also a ong story.....

haha I did that once too! I was asked if I wanted to departe on that rwy instead lol It was straight after my not so good landing mentinoed, that was a very bad night....

Back in the old days- late 2004 this is- I was flying online with a group of guys in Norway. I had organised the whole online flight, and we were all landing at some pretty airport in the mountains. I was the last one down, so the other 10+ guys were all parked up next to the runway watching me- I made a nice approach, touched down a little fast and couldn't stop... I didn't know what key reversed my engines, and my brakes wouldn't hold my Kingair still and I travelled right off the end of the runway and plopped down into the fjord at the other end!

Talk about embarrassed, I immediately logged off, closed flight simulator and didn't visit that server for quite a few days

Mine would have to landing with the weals up,

I made a great approach to NZCH, 02 in clear weather and "touched down"Â￾ (or at least I thought so ) and the next thing I knew I had the crashed sign.

mines a tie between forgetting to put the landing gear up, retracting flaps, or doing a flight, then forgetting to put fuel in the plane before the next one

Real world, while training at Wellesbourne (EGBW), I was cleared to taxi for a solo sortie, departing runway 18. Instead of turning right, I turned left and was merrily heading towards the hold for 36, when I heard the AFISO on the radio "Er... Mike Bravo, where do you think you're going?"

In FS, I was on VATSIM, and had just landed a Cessna 195, with two others on final behind me, when I slammed on the brakes in order to vacate at a rapidly approaching intersection, and promptly put the plane on its back!

Hahaha about an hour ago I was attempting my first ATC procedures for Crazy lol little did I know I sent him miles away from Bankstown (he had a simulated critical patient) lol I think I just need a few more lessons.

He finally landed just not at Bankstown he redirected himself to YSSY.

A real world one here guys, while running up a PA38 at Wellington on the dual componant of my solo consolodation, I noticed that the engine was running really rough up untill about 2000 rpm. I did all my trouble checks, mags, carb heat and finally the primer which appeared to be locked. After concluding that there must be plug fouling I taxied back to the club and shut down. Several other instructors tried to solve the problem that day without success. It wasnt untill a few days later that my instructor pulled me aside and said "You know that problem that we had with WAC the other day?" "Yeah" "Well the primer was still half out!!" Needless to say, I felt like a complete muppet and couldnt show my face in the club for a little while after that. At least I picked it up on the ground

Some great yarns coming through group, thanks for sharing, good to see some real world stuff as well.

I don't think I've done anything really embarassing for a long while fortunately, but when I was new to FS I used to occasionally forget to raise the gear on takeoff; nothing quite like checking outside your 757 at cruise altitude and noticing the gear is still down...
I've also landed with the gear up twice, once when I was first learning to do ILS approaches and had a bit too much to concentrate on, and the second time when I hadn't slept in 36 hours.

My real life experience. 2000ft in tow behind an aircraft my 2nd glider flight I was feeling a bit queasy from the first flight as it was bumpy up there.
"Sir I feel sick!"
"You what"
Ya know one of those moments where you really wished you had brought a sick bag and forgot it. This was one of those. Where to pit the vomit....only one place so I unzipped my flying overalls and put it there. Glider was a Blanik tandem 2 seat and I'm in the front seat.
Instructor "aw s**t"
I think it took all of less than 60seconds for him to execute an overhead approach pop the canopy and before the glider stopped rolling he was outta there

My 2nd real life experience finals with a Piper Tomahawk at Omaka a gust of wind knocks me off course and aiming instead of at the strip at a fence.
Me "doh, this doesn't look good"
Instructor" well go around again"
So I open the throttle, and dumped the flaps now we are flying 30ft over the strip.
Instructor "not a good idea to dump those flaps, hey why aren't we climbing!"
Now what have I done here(instructor knows hes just observing now lol), I recheck, doh carb heats still on.
Finally we start climbing and fly in between the trees at the end of the runway strip. Later on the ground a pilot who observed my botched landing told me " any landing ya walk away from is a good landing"

As for online embarassment for me it was while I was trainning a new pilot for my Squadron who was an ex-Air Force Fighter pilot using F4AF. I took him for his assessment flights prior to his graduation flight with the CTO. Every landing I damaged my F-16. . There have been other times where on the ground in lockon I landed with my Nav lights off and my wingman crashed into me. And other times where I crashed and fouled the runway so other players had to use the taxiway to land or take off.

Another embarrassing, and also pretty annoying moment for me was during my 'OZ TOUR 2006' crossing the straight between Canberra and Tasmania and realising I would not make it across as I was running out of fuel... I ended up pausing and topping up via the aircraft menu which was killed the whole realism aspect of the flight!

Slightly embarassing. I had set up a flight from NZQN to NZCH yesterday afternoon in real (inclement) weather. I was using the PMDG 737-700 and had the aircraft setup with a fairly substantial load of pax and cargo for a QN departure. Therefore I had the right amount of fuel required loaded also.
Anyway as I like to run FS9 with full realism I find sometimes I get building crashes with some scenery. This happened so I dropped back to the FS9 menu and unticked 'detect crashes' and reloaded the flight.
Now to make a long story even longer (sorry) I had read somewhere to always load a flight with a default MSFS aircraft and then select your addon aircraft after the flight has loaded, so I did this.
Of course the upshot of this was my PMDG 737 loaded at the gate with a lot of pax and cargo and a full belly of fuel instead of the 8000 lbs ish I wanted loaded.
And now being in a hurry I didn't notice this, setup the FMS (without looking at the Vref speeds!!) and taxied out to runway 05.
Lined up and setup the aircraft and started my takeoff roll and I remember hearing the '80 knots' call and waiting for 'V1'. The call didn't come and I was thinking that 'I'm running out of runway here..., maybe I didn't setup the FMS correctly..'. Hit full power (instead of TOGA) and managed to get the aircraft airborne as I was leaving the end of the runway (must have blown the fence down at the end I reckon).
Helpfully I hear the call 'V1', 'Rotate' followed very quickly by 'Don't sink! Don't sink!' .
Somehow through good luck rather than good management I kept the aircraft in the air and the passengers got a great view of the river valley!!!!

Haha some great stories. Matlo, I've had the very same problem myself before departing Queenstown. I set the fuel I would need before the flight, but then did not notice I parked near the refueling point for the airport that automatically refuels the aircraft.. Then unfortunately only found out I had full tanks at about V1 Good thing there is a cliff at the end of the runway at QN lol

My single most embarrassing moment would probably be flying the Level D 767 from Perth onroute to Auckland.
On departing, the co-pilot pulled up the gear (something you can have him do in that model), but out of practice with the Level D, I hit the gear lever anyway (and put the gear back down). I left the usually reliable Level D to it's own thing for a bit, and came back to the cockpit to find it bouncing off the ocean south of Adelaide. Using the replay function in the sim I went back in time to learn what had gone wrong. My excessive fuel use with the gear down made me run out of fuel! Oops

If I can think of any more (there has to be ) I'll come back. I've landed without gear down a few times, descended into mountains in the dark (so THAT'S what STARS are good for!), usual sort of things

Oh! And one last one, flying the USA IFR tour on IVAO, I landed at the wrong airport lol. Thankfully no ATC online to witness it
