Gidday all,

For those who are interested and following the development of Outerra feel free to pop over to the forum and check out my work with some of the Outerra ground textures. I even have a download link there if you want to try for yourself.

Yes, I'm liking that: nice one, Kelvin. How long did you spend on the re-work? Will you continue with your input into this side of things as Outerra develops? I think it's great that someone from NZFF is helping out with Outerra in whatever capacity they can: keep up the good work. thumbup1.gif

If there are other things down the track that I can help improve then I will. I think this is an ambitious project and I am definitely a follower of it. I spent about 2-3 days working on the textures to get them right. Quite tedious but the end result meant it was worth it.

Here are a couple of other texture modifications in HD. The dirt/grass patch is a separate texture to the grass and due to it's small size I could boost up the resolution to show it's full ability. Looks nice ey?

Thanks, I'm really getting into this. Of course it looks like there could be more to do going forward. If you have Outerra and want to try out the new textures feel free to download them.

All redone, colour matched to real HD photos.

Rocks
Grass and grass patches incl HD grass patch
Sand

hopefully more textures to come in the future to play with. The tricky thing is that you have to apply a high pass filter on the picture which can blur it so you need to find a sweet spot which looks good and minimises tiling effect.

One thing is that the importer does not handle all material types yet but work will be done to include an automated process to convert without having to edit the Matlib file with the material parameters. I could try a chrome lawnmower (hehe) now that would be quite an eyeful.

I'm going to recolour the ground texture to fit the seasons but will start with winter and summer because how the devs have created Outerra has highlighted a brilliant method for the 3d grass to match the colour of the texture beneath which is just awesome. I'll come back with some example screenshots to illustrate this.

Cheers,

K.

Ok, here are a couple of screenshots of the ground texture which illustrates the 3d grass colour toning based on the texture beneath. here I have Summer and Winter textures which I have colour matched to HD photographs of Summer and Winter photos. They could do with a little tweak but this is just to illustrate my basic point.

The devs are some really talented individuals

EDIT: I have added my recoloured spring texture as well just to give some contrast.

Blimmin aorsum! That first shot, unfortunately, is what I see out the window every day at the moment... sad.gif It's great the way they are thinking this sort of stuff through so that we don't have to put up with the "smeared JPEGs" any more. Great work Kelvin!! thumbup1.gif clapping.gif

Due to increased interest (over at the Outerra Forum) I have taken the liberty to yet again rework all textures to try and match their season. This means Winter, Summer, Autumn, and spring are included.

This is a consolidation of my other textures to try and get the best generic look for each season. (download below).

Replacement textures until the Biomes (or other texture replacements) are available. Hek, Maybe these textures could be used in the official alpha/Beta install. Anyway I hope you all enjoy these textures.

Please post comments if you like so you can give me a big head ;D

Summer

Spring

Kelvin- that is superlative mate, it's really changed the whole 'feel' of the engine which, until now, was a bit bland- The colours are spot on (for Kiwi seasons at least)

Thanks Timmo, you wouldn't believe how long it took me to try and get the colours right. Of course I was a little biased when colouring the textures (being a kiwi and all). However, I think they will do fo now. there is a very slight bit of tiling in the textures but 99% of the time you would not really notice too much.

I used HD photos to colour them. not bad though if I do say so myself (oh dear there goes the big head).
