Photoreal appears washed out

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby ardypilot » Sun Apr 14, 2013 1:06 pm

I followed the instructions on how to install NZNI over the top of VLC, and have made sure my priorities are all correct in the scenery library, and it all seems to work perfectly, except the selected areas of photoreal included appear a little washed out from a distance.

The photoreal close to the aircraft appears the normal brightness, but the stuff in the distance looks a little pale. It slowly loads brighter segments in small tiles at a time (see the screenshots below), but this is only ever the textures bordering the correctly coloured tiles nearby where I am flying, and never the entire coverage.

All my REAL NZ and VLC photoreal addons work fine. Any ideas team?

The problem is caused by the photos taken in different seasons and times of and the year the photo was taken , using the right tool it could be blended but that dose take a lot off time and want maybe a couple PCs so one can carry on working with current project while it re-colours .

It seems that the tile data is there but is slow either rendering or loading (or both). That leads me to a couple of ideas:

First turn off virus checking in the directory where the scenery is stored - in fact I tunr it off for the whole of the FSX directory.

Secondly, defrag the drive. But it would pay to run FSX a few times with this scenery and then use something like Ultimate Defrag which can move FSX and it's frequently used files closer to the outside of the disk where access is faster

I notice also that the cockpit instrument panel hasn't been fully rendered and wonder if you have the highmem fix in your FSX.cfg file - though there are other possibilities this one worked wonders for me with that fault.

Sorry Ian, I don't quite follow. Do you, and everybody else, also have this issue?

I tried loading the same area at a different season and a different time of the day, and as I flew over the mountain, it appeared to not only change the tone of the image, but actually change to a completely different photoreal image where the snow coverage on the peak was much different:

Doesn't NZNI include a photo for the mountain? So you'd need to switch off Godzone Tongariro, otherwise they will clash like this. (Godzone/VLC Tongariro was never meant to be used with NZNI, just VLC.)

Ah bang on it Robin- I hadn't renamed the 'VLC_TongariroPhoto.bgl' in my TaupoX folder, and that was causing the double up. Cheers!

Just out of interest, apart from Mikes updated addons and your patched Auckland and Tauranga sceneries, are any of the other North Island airport addons compatible with Orbx or planning to be patched in the near future at all? The VLC Whangarei seems to work alright.

Odd choices out of all the available options, seeing as there's already a high quality Tauranga available... KK also isn't a particularly exciting airfield with nothing out of the ordinary terrainwise nearby, unless they photoreal the whole Bay of Islands or something. I will be interested to see how realistic the screenshots look however, having flown parachute ops out there many times.

Masterton or one of the Coromandel flyaway destinations done to Orbx quality would be great to see.

I'm not too sure, but I think that Tauranga is on the todo list simply because this is Eddy's project? However this finally puts to bed any agreement which I had with Orbx on not duplicating airports, so it does open up a few areas for me.

I did make a list of what I'd do in NI if I was Orbx, but my list is completely different. Some similar areas, though, with some nice coastlines and waterways.

That's good to hear, Rob. thumbup1.gif
After the last episode, I don't want FTX/ORBX anywhere near my nice VLC setup. Thanks to you, Lawrie, Mike and Timmo, I don't need them.

As an aside, I've recently had a sneak peak at Chi Ridland's upcoming NZNP New Plymouth airport scenery, which is set to be released shortly.

Everyone is in for a treat- its as accurate as you can possibly get. I know that airport backwards having been based there for half of 2012 and he's put an incredible amount of detail in to it. Very high quality too, matches yours and Mikes scenery standards! Will post some real vs sim shots with Chi's permission one day soon!
