A different way of looking at things

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Here's a quick look at GEview, which I found on FSDeveloper. This lets you create a Google Earth view locked to your sim -- either FSX or in this case, Prepar3D.
The first bit shows a side-by-side view, and then I've arranged my screen to show how you could overlay things to allow for a little panel. Sorry the sound cuts out, but that's because the browser window has focus.

This is what I have been looking for in a flight simulator since FS2000 (and it's only taken 15 years to get there)!!!

Many thanks, Robin.

Did something like that in FS9 with the mini panel along the bottom.

Another intriguing tool is 'websimconnect', which is a HTTP server for FSX, letting you, among other things, create complex displays based on web content. What piqued my interest was the ability to place this content on a texture, so you could for example have a real flight schedule on display at an airport....
Or you could have a movie playing at an open-air theatre...
The guy who is working on this used it to embed the above GEview as a gauge display.

Unfortunately there are those in the sim community whom seem to think that websimconnect would be a great way to advertise products. Just what we need.
Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Luckily that seems to be just the simmers not the devs. I couldn't help but laugh at the "innovation" of real time ads.

Yes of all the possibilities that dynamic texturing etc could do the best that most simmers could come up with was ads....as if there isn't enough of that intrusion in our lives already.

Hmmm have tried to install this but I cant locate the earth.html file referred to in the instructions. I have done a search of the entire PC but locate it....and yes I do have GE installed !Anyone have any ideas?

Hey Rob,

I'm wondering about the 3D autogen (like vegetation and buildings)... Is that Google Earth magic or you did it?

Cheers

That's Google Earth -- they've made some huge strides in 3D cities lately. As Ian points out, it doesn't hold together so well down low, but from higher up it is very effective.

The buildings look fine .. its those 'Fred Flintstone' tree's in the bottom left corner and if you were flying a helicopter the table/ground mesh it is horrid - give it another ten years and something would really look the part.

You can run this from the Google site , requires a little navigating .. its pretty horrid at/for low level helicopter stuff.

Think I made a big oops
Followed the instructions and right clicked on the dll.xml to edit. Copied and pasted the info from the installation instructions but when I clicked back on the file the entry changed from the original info to something different. when I went to edit the file again to remove the new entry the original information is there but changes when I click on the file (if that makes any sense) and of course forgot to back up the file before I edited it

Hi guys
How do you add this

<Launch.Addon>
<Name>HttpX</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
<Path>Modules\HttpX.dll</Path>
<DllStartName>module_init</DllStartName>
<DllStopName>module_deinit</DllStopName>
</Launch.Addon>

to the dll.xml file

That is strange, that should copy and paste directly, I have not touched the dll.xml files for a while, was this for the FSX or for a 500 model ?
