A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Confused

Postby gojozoom » Tue Apr 07, 2015 8:08 pm

I'm confused. I can't decide if I'm a "Flightsim Snob" or "Tweaking Addict"...

Here is what I mean: in real life, I'm a simple guy with simple needs. Nothing luxurious, nothing over the top. Simple house, simple car, and a loving family. That's it. I can't think of any objects in my environment that I don't need (you know, the I want vs I need thing). And that alone makes me happy.

But in flight simming...Oooh, that' s a whole different story. I always want something I don't have. A highly detailed tricycle gear radial plane, or an ultra-realistic tundra-wheel bush plane that can do 200 knots...
Sigh... I spend days, with researching and finding a model (be it freeware or payware). Once I acquire it, I'll take further 2 days (at least) to tweak it to my liking - I've become pretty fluent with aircraft.cfg, and air files - my source of truth is usually cockpit videos an operating manuals.

Anyways, once I've been through the process, I fly that PERFECT creation once or twice and then...eh, let's find something else that I don't have - and the cycle starts again.

Strange thing is, I don't have this in other areas of my life, just flight simming. Why can't I just enjoy without seeking? Is it about having more, or tweaking? Am I a "Flightsim Snob" or "Tweaking Addict"?

Is it just me?

I think for many people, tweaking is half if not more of the fun of flight simulation. Much like taking apart a radio as a kid to find how it works or constantly messing with cars/engines/boats/bikes etc, some of us are just wired to enjoy the act of improving and fixing things rather than actually using them! I spent so long over the years trying to improve FSX's framerates that I had to stop myself sometimes and say right, pick a plane and fly it from A to B properly instead of a quick circuit to check framerates!

Now I try to focus more on the view and the immersion of flight simulation. Like a sub 1 hour 737NGX flight between two cities, with some nice scenery in between, some interesting weather and a challanging approach. Along with stuff such as FS2 crew and VATSIM, you can really lose yourself in the fun of a flight and the satisfaction of putting all the aviation knowledge to good use.

That is the deal , enjoying what you have , ...... then from there you can start twiddling ...... Today my fave flights using old school navigation and nailing it on approach with a good weather program B-) .... course VFR Photo Real would take first place.

..never satisfied... ...!

My whole house is crammed full of "Stuff" that I am never quite satisfied with.....

Musical instruments of all sorts crammed up to the ceiling...

Various Motorcycles dripping oil and petrol everywhere...

Computer hardware in boxes, everywhere....

Books and Magazines collecting cobwebs...

Pots and pans, etc, etc, for cooking...

Old Radios, electronics bits and bobs...collecting dust...

Always upgrading and wanting newer "stuff"....

...will it never end?..... :o ...!

...seems NOT!.... ...!

Paul.... .... ....!

You know if this wasn't a flight sim forum these two words could really change the definition of things....

Not a thought , just thinking , tho many articles are well out date , they are very interesting to have as historical reference , strange I keep heading that direction for some reason .
