It was so powerful I thought it was the CHCH fault popped again , for you to feel it like that in Tauranga , no wonder power went of in Wellington.

Hope everyone down there is ok. My thoughts with you all today. I guess I am 'lucky'; my wife and I were only just there and flew out yesterday morning. Hmmm...

Appears the worst damage is Northern Canterbury, two dead but could be worst , couple towns inland are cut off so still getting peoples in the area.

Sure felt it in Wellington. Very large rolling motion, lots of noise. Must have gone on for at least 3 mins probably longer.
Biggest I've ever felt, very scary!! Lost power till around 5 this morning.
Luckily no damage to our brick house, can't believe how much it moved!

Paul , when I mentioned your Birthday and to really rock the town ... I did not mean it literary

... watching the news this morning, no wonder everyone felt it , the geological team in Wellington said it was 30 times more powerful than the Christchurch Feb quake that directly on top of the city six years ago , and your right it lasted a very long time .

Felt it in Auckland too!
Hope everyone is OK, we'll only know through the day - I have a couple of chaps flew into Wellie this morning, no comms.
Of course everyone assumes cellphones are the answer in a disaster - they are not, first to go down due to overload.

It is quite amazing how a quake takes out the comm's but even the roads and rail completely knocked out ..... the worst thing and bloody typical is when peoples to evacuate ... in come the 'Snipes' and steal and loot abandoned houses .... !

Man sounds like a lot of us were all pretty lucky huh. Hope Doug and others round Blenheim, Picton etc are OK. Have we got any members from Hamner?
I'n in Hamilton, was awake when it started, house started creaking like a bloody Lockwood house (which it doesn't usually) then the doors started swinging and house really started complaining. I walked down the corridor to check on my daughter in case she was freaking out and walking was like being on the Cook St Ferry, all up and down and sideways.
Very scary.

Dean , I believe I'd the more fortunate again because my place is a little pillbox without the weight of a full roof on top with only six large wooden beams to absorb the movement.

All is good here Quite a good shake though power went off but only for about half an hour and our Marlborough Lines boys had it back on again.
One cat has only just turned up again and is now hiding under my bed and as for the other one he is following me around everywhere and every little shake he is under my feet.
Only one ornament broken that fell out of the wall cabinet a few more n the floor but nothing to bad.
As Dean said like being in a boat in a moderate sea.

Was on the second floor of the hotel in Wellington, and I'm glad I wasn't on a higher floor as it certainly rolled for awhile.

I was on the four floor around after the bad Feb quake, around May in CHCH hospital , YEAH when ya upstairs boy things do feel a little different , a weird sensation and I was by a window so able to see the change , typical N/E blowing , that seemed to stop for a whiles , that was looking out over the park and Avon river , did create a bit of noise to with over patience's .. one thing for sure it was very lucky it was not centered under Welly .. that would have really disastrous with the strength they mention , the Energy 30 times larger than CHCH.

Certainly was a good one. And very long. Here in Blenheim the aftershocks and quakes from Seddon/Kaikoura and Cheviot have been relentless. People are starting to get a bit motion sick !!
So far I have seen nothing out of Kaikoura township. Poor buggers. The road north and south of Kaikoura is Munted with a capital "M". It will be a long time before the road will be open. We are ok here with no damage to house or contents, but there has been damage to buildings in town.
There has been some significant ground movement throughout the affected areas. Cape Campbell has reportedly shifted 2m further north. !!
