In EVERY disaster that I have ever come across, there is someone who will say:
"Luckily there was..." and you can fill in the blank of what DIDN'T happen, or what COULD have happened.
How this improves what DID happen is unclear; this was a Bad Day alright, and that's the end of it!

You could just imagine the discussion at the dinner table that night. "Hi honey tell me what you did at work today?"
