Random thoughts on Microsoft Flight Simulator

There's a lot to take in, it'll be a while before everything becomes clear, but that's part of the fun. First of all, the install -- some people are finding it tricky. There's another thread here with a link to possible solutions, so I won't go over that. All I'll say is that on install, and every time you run it, there are various stumbling blocks, such as logging into Xbox Live, then checking updates, and logging into the various other servers. These don't give much indication of what is going on, and they don't indicate when things have gone wrong, you'll just sit there waiting. So if it seems like it's taking too long, then I'm inclined to reach for ctrl-shift-Esc, and End things. Most of the time it'll do better when you try again.
No doubt most of us just dive in, which is the correct way of doing things! Once you've had a look, you'll start to wonder why things don't work like the old sims, so you really should spend some time setting things up. If you are lucky, your controller will be supported, and will do the hard work for you. If not, then be prepared to fiddle a bit. And as always, you can tweak your settings as often as you like, until you get sick of it or get things set up the way you like.
One annoying thing -- I use a joystick, which set itself up nicely, although I needed to tweak it to get the drone working. This time around it doesn't want me to use it to control the drone, I have no idea why. At the moment I'm controlling the drone with the keyboard, which isn't that intuitive... I am thinking of grabbing an Xbox controller, which is meant to be the best drone controller. There goes another $100.
I haven't really been able to say during the alpha that a lot of us with middle-of-the-road systems will be happy with the performance. With my seven year old i5 | GTX980 | 16GB RAM I'm able to use High settings, at 1440, although this is simply flying around NZ countryside, I would be better off setting to Mid in built-up areas. Here's a snapshot of performance during a flight along the Coast to land at Greymouth. This is while using the drone, as the cockpit does reduce FPS by 2 or 3. And of course things may be different with photogrammetry, when flying in Europe/US etc where they have those new-fangled things.
Image
This seems very nicely balanced, the alpha used a lot less CPU and a lot more GPU. The FPS may seem low, but I'm very happy with it, as I suspect I'll get better when my new PC arrives... if it arrives....
Bearing in mind that P3Dv5 just fills up the GPU and stops.
Getting back to the servers, this afternoon I wasn't seeing any/much real traffic, so I think this may come and go depending on the server load etc. I have seen a couple of simmers, but would expect to see a lot more when everyone gets into it.
Multiplayer is a lot simpler with MFS, you really just need to turn up. Someone should set up a flight, just to kick things off. I would imagine something casual, just fly from A to B, via some of the sights.

Well yes Rob you have put your thoughts and experience down very well, most of which I
would I agree with except the upgrade route. That path I have already taken so that's one thing
I don't have to worry about. I just jumped in boots and all to check my Saitek gear, the only
thing that didn't work was my trim wheel. I have all my buttons on my yoke mapped to the views
in P3d4 so I am going to try to do the same with MFS. As you say there is a lot to take in and so much
that is not intuitive. No doubt we will all learn with trial by fire.

no problems at all with download took 8 hours overnight , no problems using it either . have flown A320 Auckland to Wellington and Wellington Auckland, flight was good with ILS landings at both. (although I panicked coming into 23L at NZAA as glide slope didnt seem to kick in although it was showing as being there) . Only issues I have are , not all switches function on A320 but enough work to fly. ( my flight factor A320 on Xplane is fully functional ) flew over Rolleston and my house wasn't built but has been there 8 years (road is formed but no house).I do love the approaches which are always lacking in other sims. NZ airports do not function (except for NZQN) and dont look too bad. My joystick (logitek) was recognised straight away and needed no attention. I have bought the top of the range version with many fully functioning airports , havn't tried them yet. Cost is not too bad when ypou think what three functioning airports would cost and you get around ten of them. ATC reminds me of X Plane . All in All very pleased but can see room for improvement. Best out of the box sim yet in my opinion. Would like to see simbrief added at some stage .

Question for those who have already downloaded 2020 ... what is the total size of the d/l?

If the sim requires 154Gb drive space that's saying I'll be using half my monthly broadband allowance in 1 day.

Enquiring minds 'n all.

It's just a little over 90GB.

I've had another brief flight this morning, out of Balclutha, way down south. It was very overcast, but flyable in my 172, although I could see rain shafts way off in the distance, which was just so immersive. I really think my flying has improved with this sim, with a little help from my AI co-pilot. I don't give him control of the aircraft, he just handles the ATC. Although he can fly ok if you let him. However he does tend to want to to to IFR even though I'm flying VFR, so that ATC continues to harass me, until I decline their kind services.
I actually got an Xbox achievement, it's been a long time since I've seen one of those.
A few more people flying about today, I see, I can't wait for the weekend when things should start to fill up.
I went for a walk yesterday and popped into Noel Leemings to see if I could answer a few questions I had about the Xbox controller. They didn't seem to have the one I wanted, and the staff were busy, so I walked to the Warehouse. They had a clone controller, so I did a quick online check, and found one very good review, so I bought it at $59. However it does seem to be munted, so I'll take it back today. I may swap it, but they'd need to check it first to make sure that the light comes on.
My new PC is on its way!

If your house isn't there [in Rolleston] after 8 years, then my house is probably just still a field! :)

I don't have the new sim yet - I'm waiting - I expect to trial the HP Reverb G2 some time Sept / Oct and I want to see how that works out first.

Spent 2 days on the new program. I am sorry to say there is a long way to go to equal my p3d simulator. You cannot see your house and setting a non supported joystick is clunky. Orbx NZ is way better.

Yes, luckily it recognised my joystick, but the early alpha didn't -- setting it up was a process, that's for sure! I'm not sure if we'll see an influx of controller support in the coming weeks, but that would help a lot for those just coming into flightsim. However with the release version, both my joystick (Thrustmaster T-Flightstick X) and Saitek yoke were set up automatically and logically.

In my experience you are 'likely' to see your house, or at least a house in the same location and footprint. If you live in a photogrammetry area (none in NZ) then you may see your actual house, albeit a bit distorted.

I can certainly see my house, and my son's house. I've never seen my house in Orbx NZ, although I've seen my previous house in Real NZ Christchurch:)

It is pretty clear that this simulator will need to develop over time, so some folk may be better off waiting a year. I've rekindled my love of simming starting with the alpha, so I'm here for the duration.

full top of the line product took 95GB and around 8hours to load . Flew NZWN to NZAA gate to gate inn A320 , no issues ILS full landing at 23L . Airports are reasonable quality with animated vehicles but no services available in NZ except NZQN. Noticed that NZAA had trees on LHS of runway ?? when landing at 23L . Also NZWN seems to be inundated with foliage. Happy with what I have. Flew 747 Schipol to Heathrow but landing did not go well (my Fault ) but these fully animated airports look amazing. NZCH to NZQN next flight.

Yes, the airports are serviceable, but they will all need a bit of attention. Although I shouldn't really talk about the alpha, I will say that things have improved over time. Airfields in NZ tend to have strange buildings, I think because the hangars are recognised mainly as utility shed, because they are small. And little airfields like Neils Beach have a couple of staff on-hand to park you:) That'd be a good job....
When people said that they wouldn't need addons, I did snigger a bit, to myself. Airport packs will be in high demand, and regional airports will be a big hit.

I returned my faux Xbox controller today, but they didn't have a replacement, and can't get one. Checking on Trademe, I can buy them from the UK only! I need to figure out whether a normal PC controller like a Logitech Gamepad would be a good solution for drone control... I don't like the idea of buying an Xbox controller at $99, as these are wireless (bluetooth) and I'd need to deal with charging, batteries etc. Xbox always was a great way to spend all your money.

EDIT: I looked at Flybuys, and the Logitech gamepad is there for 240 points, I have 243, no-brainer really:)

That's just dreadful, I was wondering if there'd be an issue on release, simply because this is just so much data going to so many people. All I'd suggest is that you give it another go in a week, or when the install issues are reported as solved.

I managed to get the download started again. With any luck I’m might be flying by the end of the night.
Heading to Wellington tomorrow so won’t get much flying in other than been a passenger in an ATR

just downloaded London Highlights from Orbx . Seamless download and install really enhanced London with missing skyscrapers and details . Looks good for 3rd party addons.

There are multi disc packs available for dowloading it is quite a stack of discs.
