I'm not in a hurry to get MSFS 2024

I've been there since 1990 and FS 4. Every time I was in a great hurry (too much of a hurry) and often enough we paid the price with this haste. A new computer would also be necessary; upgrading the old box isn't worth it. So I'll stick with FS 2020 for another 1 year + as long as it doesn't get "shut down" by the Microsofties and leave the beta testing to people who will get involved. How do you see that? Then there are announcements like this one from Just Flight. To my knowledge, this is not an isolated case.

Yes you make a good point.
I was late for MSFS 2020 for this reason, and if I'm to get my 4 years' worth out of the sim, should wait another 2 years.
It absolutely will depend on whether the core sim issues are addressed in MSFS 2024.

With 2020, I wasn't sure about my PC, so I signed up for a very cheap intro to Game Pass. After the first month I knew the sim worked ok, so I bought it. I have bought a new PC since then, though, still quite budget but acceptable performance.

I'm a sucker for those long, paranoid threads over at Avsim, and although I don't speculate much, I do think that the release of 2024 is being handled very differently from 2020, such as no real beta, reviewers don't get early previews, and developers don't agree that their work will be backwardly compatible as promised. Maybe it isn't ready, but based on a couple of days with the alpha, I think it'll be ready enough for me.

I have a few sims installed -- FSX, Aerofly FS2, X-plane 11, X-plane 12, P3Dv6 and MSFS. Really, I only fly in MSFS these days. I don't plan on removing 2020 next week, but I suspect that it won't see much use in the future either. Maybe time for a clean-out...

I'm more of a hop-in-a-172 type of simmer, so I think I'll enjoy the new sim. Take a look at this stream, twotonemurphy checking out bush flying in the alpha, he knows how to have fun, and isn't a stickler for reality. Despite the shenanigans, he gives one of the best intros to some of the new sim features.

I'm at least 18 months to two years away from a decent PC upgrade so sticking where I am (2020). Not that I use it much these days ... just kinda lost interest since I can't fly IRL any more... :(

I'm not queuing up to get 2024. Kind of got fed up with the floating scenery issue at the destination airport. I run XP12 mostly these days. I find that it generally behaves better. It'd just be nice if there were more developers.

I've hardly had time to look at all the previews out there, but this video certainly showcases the enhanced graphics in particular. A huge leap forward from 2020 - breathtaking!

That’s a shame Jeff. I would have thought that it would have been the other way around with flying more in the sim if you can’t in the RW.
Was this due to medical reasons?

I succumbed and bought the cheap one.
My strategy is clear: put in the new flightsim software and see if it runs under VR.
If no (and you could draw a possible flowchart here) either dump it or get better PC hardware.
The latter is almost a given depending only on timescale, the way it always has.
For years.
So no stress there :)
Can't wait for Christmas.

Serendipity -- normally I look after my grandson Mondays and Wednesdays, so the plan was to wake up at 5am Wednesday, install the sim, have it running well by 6am, and then try it for an hour before the boy wakes up. Then turn it off until the evening. However because of the Hikoi, his grandmother probably can't look after him Tuesday, so we've swapped days. So I know what I'll be doing all Wednesday. And Thursday and Friday.

The weird thing is, I think I have David Seymour to thank for this.

Subject: Waiting to Upgrade to MSFS 2024

After reading the many reactions here and elsewhere about upgrading to MSFS 2024, I feel confident that my decision to wait is the right one. Many of us have invested a lot into add-ons and hardware for MSFS 2020, so jumping to a new platform immediately isn’t an easy choice. On top of that, it’s uncertain how stable and compatible the new simulator will be in its early stages.

For now, MSFS 2020 continues to provide everything I need for enjoyable VFR flights, and there’s still plenty of areas and add-ons left to explore. Upgrading also often means more than just buying the simulator—it often requires new hardware, which I’m not ready to commit to yet.

I think it’s sensible to monitor the market, listen to community feedback, and watch how the new simulator evolves over the coming months. Hopefully, this will give us a clearer picture of its long-term stability and compatibility.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts—it’s always valuable to hear different perspectives!

I'm going to be very lazy - and let others do all the heavy spadework with respect to installing alongside an existing 2020 or a fresh install.

I still remember my initial purchase/install procedure - all sorts of ridiculous XBox related stuff (why???), then it wouldn't activate correctly and - finally - the insane location path - even though I specified a separate destinatio9n drive. Yes - I get it (now) - files are stored where I put them, but the [idiotic] symlinks remain long and confusing. The folder protection/encryption is also annoying (but I respect the need for it).

I'm a sucker for eye-candy, so 2024 looks very enticing. I doubt whether I can hold out for long. As to all my addon aircraft or sceneries, I'm sure they'll be plenty to play with - that are either default or work "out of the box". I mean - do I *really* need 200 aircraft??

Great, sounds like I'll have plenty of bandwidth tomorrow morning. As I get tomorrow off, I may sleep in to 6am, though.

Well, I shouldn't have bothered. The install went ok, although wildly fluctuating download speeds. Just under 2 hours. Then the 'too many users' screen for a while, finally the intro video streamed, then 'server issues'. What time does the rest of the world go to sleep?

In exactly 2 hours and fifty two minutes from now.
Let us know how you go.

Cheers, managed to get in at 12:30, still got very low bandwidth warning, and trees were black boxes. Had my normal first flight, Hokitika to NZCH, very nice, but the trees stayed black/square. I've just quit, and will attempt to get back in just to see if the trees are fixed.

I'm going to wait until the weekend to install it, hoping all the server overload issues are sorted by then.
