What's Your Display?

I happened to look at this month's screenshot competition entries on an old CRT display.
Boy do some of 'em look dark and muddy!
I wondered if this might influence the monthly voting and explain why some of the really good screenshots don't do better.
SO: how do you see your flight simulator?

That's a good question Charl actually. My screenshots seem over exposed and washed out here on a LCD at work, and yet look just perfect on my setup at home.. And then sometimes too dark on a CRT. I'm a 19inch LCD for the record for simming, and a 17inch CRT as the 'other' display on my set up. I've tried to get the colours to match as best as possible, but it's difficult!

Well I don't think it depends so much on the CRT or LCD, more the CRT settings, I have my CRT at home maxed out (brightness and contrast 100percent) and it doesn't look much differant to this laptop screen, in fact my CRT is actuly brighter..

Still got the compaq 7500 alister? I still have mine, 17inch CRT, its old and brilliant!


btw charl, I have been thinking a very similier thing since the first screenshot compatitions I saw, not so much CRT LCD but more screen brightness, as I used to fiddle alot with the brightness in the past, but now I just have it highest.

Ive got a 1440x900 lcd display on one and a 1024x768 lcd on the other ,the smaller one displays a little darker than the other but are near enough .
While ive got fs runing ,it also displays at what i think is normal , im glad im not colour blind , I dont know how many times ive had to tell my mate that hes just painted his car PINK in nfspeed

17 inch Dell CRT here- I hate gaming on LCD screens as the contrast goes all weird as soon as you angle your head a little up/down of the flat on postion.

17 inch Samsung LCD.. Trolly generally i sit still while I'm gaming.. which isn't often enough btw..

it's obviously been a few years since you've games on an LCD. LCD technology is so far ahead these days that you can easily have 170+ degrees viewing angle. plus CRT's don't have widescreen, which is perfect for FS
me personally? I'm using a 17" Samsung LCD, my next monitor's going to be a 22" wide LCD

17 inch crt here.The wife has a 17 inch lcd on her computer and I still reckon mine looks better.LCD uses less power but I haven't told her that

I have a 22" LCD widescreen for gaming and flightSim, and a 17" LCD for work, though I still think my old 21" Phillips CRT had better color (better black and whites)

Yes, I have to be at quite an angle ( I have to stand up and walk away) before I lose the bright image on my 22". I guess there's also the question of quality -- you'd really need to have a look at a few LCDs before you find one that suits you. There's a lot of rubbish out there, but for a few dollars more you can get something which is perfect for FS. Have you ever looked at the big screen TVs on display in the big stores? There is a very definite quality range as you walk down the rows. For me, only a handful 'work'.
I have always worked in graphic design and photography, and used to have a very nice professional CRT monitor, which was easier to calibrate, but I couldn't go back now, even if the old CRT grew another few inches. However I still think that photos look more 'real' on CRTS, and when I show photos now I tend to stream them via the Xbox to the old CRT TV -- much lower resolution, of course, but nice and natural.

By the way, now that I've seen Ian's 26 inch LCD, I'd consider a 22" the minimum Maybe I'll need to go to 32 inches...
As far as the original post goes, there are simple ways you can set up your monitor to get a good tones. Too many people just turn everything right up to get the brightest image, but at the expense of tonal range.

i have a phillips 107s lightscreen crt 17" monitor that i have had for years, it is one of the best crt's i have owned. it give great visuals, and i don't run with everything turned upi have contrast at 87 and brightness at 97. my new aussie computer i am hoping to get when i get there will have at minimum 20" lcd

I've got a 19" Dell LCD monitor, works really well for me, and a lot better than the 17" CRT we have on the other desk, in both contrast and ease of viewing.

2 x 19" CRT as main and have 3 old 17" crt's and 2 x 15" sitting around along with their associated computers all waiting till I can afford to network them all up.

An OLD/ELDERLY Compaq. Came with my dads Windows 95 machine. 12-13 years old it is now. we don't use it much but is there when we want it
