FS Water Directory

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Can someone tell me where the main FS9 water textures are stored, and what the file names are?

I downloaded a new set with an automatic installer (stupid me), tried installing a new water set, which I don't like. I want to copy the original fs9 water files from a virgin install which I have on a seperate PC, but am unsure on what to copy over.

Cheers..

Probably here:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\World\texture\water_****.bmp"
But run the autoinstaller again, this time pointing it to a temporary folder, then see what it replaced.

Hi there,
If it is of any help: Create a folder (say on ur desktop) and fool the automatic installer to install into there and that will give you all the things that are overwritten.
Done that sort of thing often myself, cheers P

so what are the water textures for in the fs9 /texture folder? thats where ive changed them many times before ,and im pretty sure they have something to do with them as they have alot of default textures in this folder runways/clouds/etc so i guess these are water as well ,file names 000b2su1 / 123b2su1 / 124b2su1 / 127b2su1 bmp directory is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\texture

Yeah you're right there are water textures in the main texture folder.
But not all...
As I said, it makes sense never to just run an executable straight into your flightsim folder.
Always point it to a dummy folder, then copy (not cut) the folders over.
This way you can keep track of what you're going to overwrite.
Of course, making a backup is still the easiest way, just look at what is going to be overwritten, and change the original file extension from .bmp to .old or somesuch.

When you are happy with the new lot, delete the dummy.

But of course we all knew that...

yeah i alway just d/l the file and spit it into fs9 manually ,i only use the installer if its from the likes of abacus /realnz /and other top addons ,
you should always back up that you proberly know or are kicking yourself for not doing this ,this time around ...ive gotta have a look for the others in world /texture folder ,im always looking at changing the look of things /texture .
so thanks charl for pointing me there ...
mike

edit: yeah ive just check that directory and yeah found acouple of them ,you will need " imagetool " from the sdk pack to help view the bmp unless you have something the reads the texture anyway ...

Unfortuantly, the installer searches for the FS9 reg entry and knows where to go staight away- anyway, thanks for the info. After a lot of copying and pasting between computers, I'm back to where I started smile.gif
