I better not go to fly to NZOX and find there isnt any NZFFAC cos youve blown it away with you 747 hahahaha better watch out CAA will get ya if you keep leaving hazardous craters on the strip lol.

Note: Okiwi airfield is closed until October

It is closed during Winter every year as the weather is too bad to land there usually- Pacific Storms are always on Okiwis doorstep- hence the name of Great BARRIER Island.

Indeed, I am thinking about purchasing a BN Islander ticket in the summer, just for the ride there and back B)

As I can remember DC-2s coming on strength I am on old member, however this is actually my first time on this forum, so Hi Guys, I’m Ed.

Being a long term Fight Sim addict I blundered onto this site to find the first thing that hit my eye was talk of Great Barrier Island, one of my favourite places on this planet of ours. I live in SE Queensland but have visited the island on a number of occasions. Yes, Okiwi strip has been an ongoing wet weather problem for many years, but do you realize that the strip has been open for seven weeks now and neither of the airlines will fly in there because of the condition of the strip !!! Like WOW.

An air link with the mainland is vital for the people on the northern part of the Barrier as in extreme WX it is sometimes not possible to drive to Claris. Auckland Council are in the chair and not doing the job it seems.

To put you all in the picture I have a couple of links that will bring you up to speed with the situation. Admittedly this is from the viewpoint of the locals but then does Ak Council have a viewpoint? It’s very hard to find out.

Everyone has his/her own take on a situation but I’m for some of that black stuff for Okiwi Station, cheers, Ed

Brothers joining the restoration group to get her up and running again but any ways seem you spend more time at this spot , Okiwi - I never been there .. spose nothing for me to do there .

G'day Ian, Your bro will be busy, I hear that the old bird at Albury has some corrosion problems. A few years back the Albury Council took it down from its long time 'perch on the pole' trick and were determined to unload it to anyone, anywhere. I joined in the general uproar to have it stay in Oz and we won. One plan was to hack the nose off it, use that as an exhibit, and junk the rest ! They were not showing a great deal of sensitivity. Eventually it seemed that the old girl was going to a new owner at Bankstown but nothing happened, do you have any update on that?

Re my seeing the advent of the 2s. I was a liitle kid and my father pointed out to me, as one overflew our home headed for YMEN, that its wing span was SO BIG it was almost as long as our house block ! As I grew I came to realise that we did live on a small patch of suburbia.

OKIWI - What to do? Take in the fresh, clear air, look at the idyllic inlet to the north of the field, the impressive Pa, hike to Mt Hobson then rest up drinking slops of your choice in Port Fitzroy. It's quiet out there and the ones who can't hack quiet don't go, bewdy !!
