NZFF

Now that I've got aircraft I like to fly, my next step is the enviroment I fly them in. I'm looking at getting REX - Real Environment Xtreme to make my IFR flights abit more interesting.
I'd first like a few opinions from people that are currently using it.
Is it worth it ?
How has it affected yor frame rates?

There doesnt seem to be alot of reviews on the net about it at the moment.

Trev , I mistakenly brought the ActiveskyX and Enviorment Upgrade - so able to compare both as it was REX i was wanted . in a way both as good as each other but for the REX having a higher resolution cloud form ( double photo size ) , the water textures have been enchanced , in a way nice to be able to compare both now one , the latter now is redundant .

Im a FEX lover ,pretty much the same as REX but without the weather engine at the moment ,the clouds and water are in my opinion the best there out there available ,,on the note of REX and active sky ive heard they can be run together ,i think this is also the case with FEX,,have not tryed this as im very happy with the performance increase of FEX alone ..

Looks like something went AWOL in your post ... which one is redundant?

the weather ... I wish , not the REX

am currently running activeskyx and REX together with no problems - am still considering whether or not to get activesky advanced to get the thermal and wake effects or not - may even migrate to xplane as it's supposed to be even better realism in the weather department-

I think the last leg of my tour from bangkok down to Phuket had both running together

firstly, i am a REX user but curious about how to get better real time results with a program such as ASX for fling in NZ

so a couple of questions if i may (& please correct any of my assumptions):

a) as i understand it, ASX is an engine which collects the same real time data that FSX's own engine collects (from Jeppesen) but develops its detail more comprehensively and replaces FSX's engine analysis - to give better / more realistic weather graphics etc. even in FSX itself !!

I don't however understand how this ASX analysis is read by REX which I undestand has its own weather engine ??

b) one of my frustrations with any weather (engine) is that throughout NZ and Oz they are only a few METAR stations included by Jeppesen - hence at Queenstown for example, it is an interpolation of a Dunedin METAR (the nearest Jeppesen included / collected station).

Is anyone aware of a means to access data such as that collected by NZ Metservice that might be added to a weather engine for more comprehensive / detailed analysis of NZ weather - particularly given the influence of NZ's terrain on weather.
Our friends in the US & Europe get data from stations 10-20nms apart in most directions. The data for NZ is from about 10 stations basically along the 700nm length of NZ.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I use both REX and Active Sky Advanced. no Troubles and fps fluid stable. Its the same if I used REX only. REX has a update coming for FSX and they have the Fs9 REX coming. So I recomend REX and ASA as a stand by backup. Both addons work very well in Windows 7 both 32 and 64 bit. So thats a plus when looking at the new operation system from MS. Since adding Windows 7 ive seen even more fluid gain in FPS. I stoped using FEX due to long lack of WX engine and its failure to work with Fs9. I wanted something that was fair to both sims and REX and its pending fs9 along with ASA won the battle.
