Cross the Ditch 3 - Spring 2010

Spring is in full flower in the Southern Hemisphere, making it a great time to go flying. After the huge success of the previous events, VATNZ and VATPAC are excited to announce Cross the Ditch 3 - Spring 2010.

Visit the Cross the Ditch 3 - Spring 2010 website for the latest information.

What's it all about?

For sixteen hours this December, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch.

An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes - each between a pair of cities on opposite sides of the Tasman - range from two and a half to four hours flight time.

Throughout the event, the Oceania region's two divisions will providing full gate-to-gate ATC coverage, making this the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event.

Event Times

The event runs for sixteen hours, to allow pilots from all over the world to find a time to join the fun:

  • UTC: Saturday 4th December 2010 19:00 - Sunday 5th December 2010 11:00
  • AEDT: Sunday 5th December 2010 06:00 - Sunday 5th December 2010 22:00
  • NZDT: Sunday 5th December 2010 08:00 - Monday 6th December 2010 00:00

City Pairs

The cities for Cross the Ditch 3 - Spring 2010 are:

  • Australia: Melbourne and Sydney
  • New Zealand: Auckland and Wellington

The event will consist of eight routes, from each city to either of the cities in the other country.

Auckland to Sydney and vice versa have adjacent one-way routes because of the real-world traffic volume. The other six routes have opposing traffic at alternating flight levels.

Calling all Pilots and Controllers

Flight plans are available from the Flight Plans section.

Are flights permitted in Aus/NZ airspace that are not taking part in this activity?

I'm thinking about partaking in a New Zealand domestic flight into or out of Auckland, but I am not sure if it would be permitted in this circumstance.

Yes of course Sean, go for it, in fact it'll be a great time as you'll have lots of other traffic and great ATC coverage

Great!

I'll see if I'm able to attend on Saturday. smile.gif
Will probably just make it a short trip involving Auckland and Rotorua or Tauranga.
First time with non-US/FAA ATC services, but I think I'll be fine.
