This week we'll be having our online evening at Queenstown from 8pm NZ Time (0800 GMT). Come along and try your hand at the challenging departures and approaches. ;)

Great, I have a question about the A VOR/DME approach.

I was flying in there like midnight Saturday, completly dark :D and flew the descent from 10,000ft down and passed the correct dme distance and altitudes like any other vordme approach but when I got to slope hill I had to some how get 300,000pounds down 4000ft in 2nm (its harder than it sounds! :P ) :o How are you ment to do it? Whats the correct proc?

So I suppose you have to fly visualy after slopehill? not quite a CATIIIc approach ae

Any help apreiciated
Thanks
James

the aircraft circles around the basin there to line up with RWY23, and I think they go over the airport and around the lake to line up with RWY5

I presume you were flying your 767 too? :P a bit big for Queenstown

hehe would I fly anything else? :P

Okay so round and round till I get down  I ended up doing a similier thing anyway, just a bit of an orbit, witch ended up being about three orbits, think I managed to fly over every part of queenstown whilst I did it! Pity it doesn't say to do so on the approach plate, or I didn't read it thoughly, an unexpecting pilot not a happy pilot!

Thanks for that Tim :D

From your description I take it you were on the VOR/DME alfa approach (not bravo or charlie). Being a non precision approach you'll need to join the traffic pattern at some point. Note that the traffic pattern for NZQN for aircraft greater than 5700KG is a figure of eight, not a rectangle and its is flown at 4000 feet, as zolt mentioned this traffic pattern crosses over the aerodrome. nzav8tor will know for sure....I think he's doing a tute on this approach. Hope this helps :)

Maybe you'd want to try the RNAV approach James?
