VATSIM problems! Please I need a quick answer!

For everything about online flying around New Zealand

Postby Kelburn » Sun Dec 16, 2007 3:59 pm

I go to Modules then Start Squawkbox.
It comes up as normal.
I then go and select Connect but no servers appear.
Why isn't it loading the VATSIM servers?
(Note, Squawkbox is loaded on another computer (the one I used with FS2002 before I got my new laptop - that works fine) but these computers aren't networked)

You are loading Squawkbox on a separate computer (not the one FS is running on), and they aren't networked?

No not on a seperate computer. I used to do VATSIM on the old PC but not anymore and I now do it on my laptop (well I've been trying)

I read on the vatsim forums that Squawkbox didn't install the servers properly.
How can I fix this.

I manually entred in the server but that only shows the people on the same server as me and squawkbox doesn't link all the servers.

Reinstall Squawkbox then, I guess.

If you can connect to a server, you should be able to see all traffic on the network. Although I'm not a VATSIM expert (I'm more into IVAO), VATSIM and IVAO use similar network software (variations of FSD if memory serves), and you are able to view all traffic on the network once you are connected...

If not, are you sure that you aren't seeing all the traffic? Do a check using a program like Dolomynum or ServInfo to see aircraft around you, and compare that to what you can see on the sim.

Your firewall port blocking is not allowing Squawkbox to communicate with VATSIM, check the Squawkbox website or forum for correct ports ;)

I think the site is http://www.squawkbox.ca/

I fixed the problem through downloading a .reg file from the squawkbox site.

Although whenever I log in, my user ID has 1000812(and then after the number four/five random characters)
My callsign is UAL5916. Now when ever I try to connect my home town has NZWN916, my aircraft has the aircraft name and then 916 anf my name has at the end - 916!

How can I fix this?

Perhaps try re-downloading and re-installing? Sounds like something funny is a bit wrong there... Unless Matthew has any more suggestions. :)

already re-installed it.

Man! this is annoying.
I might try FSinn?

Any help on this issue:
Squawkbox only shows traffic on the same server as me. Not other servers thus sb3 isn't linking the servers.
But all ATC is showing.

So, you did solve the port issue that Matthew said above? If you're still not seeing traffic, that is a likely cause of the problem.

How do I fix the port stuff?

I also read that NIS2008 may be the cause as that is what stops other people from seeing other aircraft.

I'll try when my demo expires.

Oh yea, Norton can be a bugger when it comes to Multiplayer, although it's effective, it's quite invasive...

I'm not sure of the details of what ports SB uses, perhaps check out the website, or maybe Matthew might know if he posts here.

Uninstall Norton and get Avast or AVG instead.

Good advice  or, in Norton's Firewall you can allow the ports mentioned in the following quote from the Squawkbox forum:

QUOTE
28 What ports does SquawkBox use for network communication?

For connecting outside your local network, SquawkBox uses TCP port 6809 and UDP port 3290 for outgoing connections only. SquawkBox does not accept any incoming connections. The DirectPlay system used by Microsoft Flight Simulator for multiplayer functionality uses a number of network ports, but those are only used internally for communication between Flight Simulator and SquawkBox.[/quote]

Someone mentioned FSINN - This seems to work better on user's computers, but there is a much bigger learning curve involved in using this software compared to Squawkbox.

I use FSINN myself, and find that with some tweaks to firewall settings, it works perfectly ;)

Hope that helps

Matt

I had an issue similar to this, it was due to a bug in the SB software looking at a port i had locked down, evidently the only solution is to log a multiplayer game in FS.

here is my rather angry thread in VATSIM...

If you search on the Squawkbox forum, the answers are on there, or in the Squawkbox manual.

Squawkbox is at http://www.squawkbox.ca/
