Sunday Night Operations Sunday 5 April 2009 - Pre-Easter Hopping Between The Towers

With Easter less than a week way, this is the day to HOP between some of our closest manned airports.

This event is the perfect one to fly between a number of different airports in a short space of time and practice your non-precision approaches. Read up on them before hand on the superb Non Precision Approach Guide written by VATNZ Member Steve Hall.

Each leg should be around 30 to 45 minutes depending on aircraft type, meaning you should able to fly between all the ports in less than three hours.

• Event Times: Sunday 5th April 2009 1900-2200 NZST / 0700-1000 UTC / 1700-2000 AEST
• Flight Time: approx. 2.5 - 3hrs to complete all return trips

I just wanted to say a big 'THANKS' to the VATNZ guys for the awesome session hosted tonight - which happened to be my first foray into the VATSIM world. Being a 'realworld' controller at NZHN and also a PPL pilot (with CPL and IFR theory) I was somewhat dubious about how well the virtual controllers would be able to reflect on real-life ATC operations. I'm happy to say that I'm now sitting here eating my hat with a side of humble pie, as it was all - within reason of course - pretty much as real as it gets!! I was most impressed with the procedures and phraseologies used and the accommodating nature of each of the controllers.

To all you NZFF-ers out there that have looked at VATSIM but shied away because of the software or learning curve: Take it from me - its well worth a second look. Firstly the software is a breeze to install and setup - you can even install it just to log on and hear what goes on. And while it may take a few flights before you manage to get your first IFR flight under your belt, there are some great tutorials on the VATNZ.net website and plenty of helpful staff just waiting to give you advice and information to help with the learning curve.

Anyway. Thanks again. I'm hooked and hope to be a regular during the SNO's!

Hey Mat. Really interesting to read your comments as a RW operator and I bet the VATNZ guys will appreciate it too. I was in the B1900d you parked next to at NZAA tonite before I left for NZHN, it was an awesome turnout ay, think there were 5 aircraft nearing approach at Auckland at the time we were on the apron there. I'm only new to the online-ATC thing too, after more than a decade of simming, and I agree the VATNZ folks are a professional bunch and are happy to help newbies thru the learning-curve.

In fact the same goes generally for VATSIM all over the globe in my experience, wherever you connect the VATSIM ATC staff are generally helpful and accomodating, especially if you let them know you made need some assistance. And the approach you mention of listening in from the apron if you're not quite ready to commit to flying is definately the way to start. See you online again some time
