Black Shark Update, 10 August 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 August 2007

Currently the team is testing build 33 which added a new airfield to the simulation world and increased the height field and texture resolution of large portions of the map (most evident in the mountainous areas). The Mineralnye Vody area has a particularly detailed height field. We're also been adjusting the world shaders for a more contrasted image. Personally, I think it looks better. We've also incorporated the tree edits by our newest test team member, TekaTeka.

The mission editor is progressing nicely and I had a chance to take a look at a test build this past week. The new map technology and scripting ability will be a pretty dramatic change from previous Eagle products. Since coming to work with Eagle since my Jane's F/A-18 days, I've wanted to have much better mission scripting tools. This ME is a huge step in that direction. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks the ME will be available to the test team to start banging on.

It looks like we're nearing the homestretch for the Ka-50 modeling. A few items with the fire suppression system, auto-pilot modes and caution/warning system remain, but on the whole things are starting to look pretty solid. The flight model will probably continue to be tweaked but right now it feels very tight.

Given the nature of helicopter combat, a great deal of time has been spent working on the helicopter and ground vehicle AI. This work continues, particularly because the AI helicopters now use a much more advanced flight model and this needs to be accounted for by the AI.

That's it for now; I'll try to do another update in a few weeks after ME and campaign system has been integrated into to the code base.

Its good that they've got Tekateka on their team as hes done some pretty good mods for lockon I guess we'll have to wait for TK before we see speed tree added to any of EDs sims.

Latest update from Wags
16 September 2007

I'm afraid that there is not much to report since my previous one. The Ka-50 is just about done at this point and we're mostly focused on testing and bug-fixing its systems. The big item in work in the mission editor (about 80% complete, the campaign builder interface, new pilot log book, and other various GUI screens. Once we get a testable mission editor, I'll post a little overview of functionality.

DCS: Black Shark Update - 22 Dec 07

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been awhile, so I thought I'd pop in and give you a brief update as to where we are on DCS: Black Shark.

Currently the test team is hard at work testing Beta 38 with a focus on: mission editor triggers, new track file system, helicopter AI, checking models, mission goals and campaign system, and town locations on map. The team is doing great work but is quite busy.

The official modder team has also been hard at work and we've been able to test Rocky's updated trees, noise map and ground textures with DCS as well as GrandSurf's new textures and objects for airbases. At the same time Yeniceri has been hard at work on new bridges and Ka-50 textures and EricJ has made a whole slew of great new Ka-50 skins. Mizzy has also created some fantastic new skins for several AI units. The partnership between Eagle and the Sim-Mod team has been working out quite well.

Eagle has mostly been focused on the DCS GUI system to include whole new briefing screens, debriefing screens, campaign creator, campaign loader, single mission select, multiplayer screen, options screen, encyclopedia reference, logbook, and main menu. Additionally, the team continues to tune the AI, the mission editor trigger system, the map, debug remaining Ka-50 avionics issues, and improve the audio system.

Right now the Ka-50 manual is around 450 pages and is about 95% translated to English. Once that is done, the full localization will start. When the mission editor and campaign system are final, we'll start on the DCS portion of the manual; that will probably add an additional 100 or so pages. All in all, we're probably looking at a 550-600 page manual for DCS: Black Shark. In addition to the PDF version that will ship with the game, we hope to also sell a hardcopy bound version.

In addition to the work cited above, the biggest task remaining is mission and campaign creation. Right now we plan on two campaigns: a more realistic counter-insurgency campaign and a father fictitious NATO vs. Russia in Georgia campaign. The full campaign editor will system will ship with the game, so of course users will be free to make their own campaigns as well. Other big mission tasks include a comprehensive set of training missions with voice over and a dozen or so single missions.

Taken as a whole, there is still a lot of work to do, but we are indeed in the home stretch now and a 2008 ship date is very reasonable, unless something unforeseen comes up (yeah, that never happens"¦). In this home stretch you can expect to see more videos now (like the producer's notes) and probably in the spring we'll be sending out press preview versions.

So, thanks for your patience and keeping the faith.

This is one of the AI aircraft for DCS black shark it will be hopefully released sometime this year. Future addons include A-10, AH64A, F-16CJ and SU25T. Theres no mention yet if this will be a flyable although ED has not mentioned if they have enough information to make it a fully modeled addon.

DCS: Black Shark Updates - 23 Feb 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

23 February 2008

Time for a quick update:

Good news folks, we got a new build this past week. Items of interest included in this build:

- Conversion to DX9 is now complete and full shadows and Z-fighting issues have been fixed.

- Created new producer's note (Basic Flight) and will be posted when team has time to add to main DCS site.

- We are now running the front end and the simulation separately rather than sharing RAM. This will help the efficiency of the engine.

- Multiplayer is a big focus now regarding implementing functionality and testing.

- More than 100 new tweaks and fixes to the Mission Editor. While this is ongoing, mission/campaign creation is in full swing.

- Continued improvements to ground units to include reworked auto-cannons, artillery area bombardment definition to also include calculations for ricochets and armor penetration, and new units have more detailed armor values according to shape.

- SA-10C and SA-15 have more realistic engagement sectors.

- Aircraft AI has had improvements to target prioritization.

- Wingman AI has had many improvements regards to flight lead orders.

- FM tweaks and system improvements to the Ka-50.

- Inertial Navigation Unit now implemented with either fly-over or Shkval lock methods. In the ME, you can set fixed INU update points.

- Fixes to the trigger system.

On another topic, since my last update, I've had several kind-hearted French speaking souls volunteer to help out with the DCS:BS French manual. So, we now hope to provide such a manual.

Thanks,
Matt[/quote]
