Just been reading about the lastest add-on scenery release from Horizion Simulation, the VFR photographic scenery for England and Wales. Surprised to read that if you install all three volumes, that it takes almost 100GB!!! I was looking at upgrading my computer to 160GB hard drive, but this add on alone would swallow most of that!!

Yeah - but NZ is about the same size as England. Imagine all of NZ photoreal. I'd give 100GB of HD for that !!!

Mmmm, hi-rez New Zealand, imagine that with enhanced mesh, ideally higher than 20 meter. Sigh, lets see what Robyn's Marlborough gives us a taste for, his FSX Taranaki was impressive in its own right.

Couldn't see from the write-up - is the 100GB a 4-season thing, or summer only?
We're about to edge into 1TB disk territory now

Its a 1 season job Charl, and includes night textures.

It's an impressive coverage, certainly.
Idly wonder if photoreal sceneries will become available for the full gamut?
I mean, I run textures which are based on summer/autumn/winter/hard winter/spring plus day/night for each, and various degreees of overcast.
Those are big combination sets.
Doing that for every bit of a photoreal job might be a big ask.

I've got the free one, seems to work ok but found it a bit fiddly. Worth a look.

I think it's actually nearer 80GB than 100, but my install is 13000 miles away, so I can't easily check! That includes the entire country at BOTH 1.2 and 2.4 metre resolution (the 2.4 is used for middle distance 'buffer' textures) AND a 5 metre resolution mesh.
Textures are Summer only, and that's likely to remain true for all photo sceneries unless they invent survey planes that can take usable high resolution photos through clouds and bad weather, or you go the Megascenery route and edit each individual tile for different seasons

Horizon GenX is simply outstanding and I can't get enough of it. Sure its only one season, but it doesn't cause me any problems. Also photoreal Taranaki shows just how good it can be, and i am looking forward to Marlborough. Moore's law said something about the number of transistors on a chip doubling every ten months (or something like that) and it seems to hold true for all technology. It is easy to predict that the present mechanical HDDs will be gone in a relatively short time replaced with flash drive or something similar. Storage will be in tetrabytes for the home user, google or similar will be merged with Flight sim and most scenery will be photographic. Then someone will work out how to put seasonal tints on to the photograhs as an overlay, Horizon already can place accurate autogen and proper regional buildings on top of the photoreal, and there we are. It might have sounded dream world once upon a time, but surely not now as some of the above is already being talked about in the literature. So for me, I can't get enough of the photoscenery and if NZ was to be completely covered on top of high LOD mesh then I will be a willing buyer. It is the future and even with my old eyes I can see it.

So are you based in GB or did you 'import' the scenery?

The other main reason that we fly over the summer months is shadow. An aerial photo project is of limited use with large shadows as it obscures features....cloud for the most part can be mosasiced out as there is large overlap between each photograph.

It seems the Google/FSX interface is already here, no longer a concept gentleman:
