FSX Acceleration arrived today from Gameplanet. I have a few problems in that the acceleration is only in one direction - downwards - as far as frame rates go! Also all repaints are removed from most default and some third party aircraft. Also the keyboard is slightly different so that any controls one has set up to use unused keys now have to be reset again.

The frame rate issue seems a puzzle. Frame rates in Godzone Auckland for example drop almost in half. Wellington is not too bad and default scenery areas seem quite ok.

Appreciate it is early days and often these problems evaporate as experience is gained.

One recommendation is to spend as long as it takes to defrag your computer after you install the update.

My computer is very high end but still have xp with the 8800gtx video. I wonder if I now have to upgrade to Vista to get all the benefits.

Look forward to others experiences and any advice to get back to what was a very good setup with good and solid 25fps.

I have a question regarding the Hornet in the acceleration addon, does the aircraft use auto-takeoff when launching from the carrier(the only way possible to take off from a carrier IRL) and have they also modeled ACLS(Auto carrier landing system) which uses TACAN instead of VOR for its guidance? This has my curiosity since IRL the pilot when taking off does it without touching the stick all he does is throttle up and let the aircraft do the take off for him. Tomcats on the other hand are another story.

The major issues seem to be with third party add ons. The missing default repaints are easily solved. Robin Corn has indicated on his web site that there is an issue with trees and this I think this pervades all thrid party scenery. Seems to be an issue with some of that VFR UK scenery. Peter Lohrs Queenstown becomes almost unusable in FSX Acceleration and that seems a tree problem too - that is a great pity as it is an iconic scenery. Godzone Marlborough and Rotorua have few issues as far as I can see. The wonderful Fletcher has a propeller problem - you cannot see through it!

I had no textures on the carrier and escorts. Solved by copying the texture directory - this points to the global/texture directory - from the cruise ship. I cannot get the launch bar to work but hold on to the brake and go to full power and you seem to get off.

I suppose half the fun of FS is to solve all these sort of problems but they do take hours to work through.

It's taken long enough for decent add-ons to start trickling through to FSX, and so most of us have been forced to make do with FS9 addons and conversion. For MS to wipe all these out with a single blow, as well as the abysmal performance of 'Deceleration', is a double whammy. There's page after page of threads on Avsim where people are having problems with it. 50% slower performance seems about average.

For once I'm glad it's delayed by two weeks in the UK - that's saved me £30!

Something I meant to publicise, but forgot all about -- Acceleration will reset some (not all) of the default aircraft configs, so you will lose any repaint entries. Simple enough to fix (you just need to re-add the entries) but a bit of a nuisance.

So the textures files are untouched? or would you need to download them again?

Yes, the textures remain, only the cfg file is reset.
One thought if you have a lot of repaints -- if I was doing the Acceleration install again, I'd backup the aircraft cfg, and copy/paste the repaints into the new cfg. But you do need to keep the new cfg, so don't just go overwriting it with your backup -- it contains some new features.

As I said, Microsft competing in their own inimitable way with the addon crowd - simply make everything else unworkable.
Simple really, worked a treat in the browser wars too.

Tim, save yourself a bundle.
My NZ$49.95 copy will be worn out by end of November, so next time you are on a round-the-world trip, stop in at Auckland and I'll let you have it for ...ooh...let's say 5 pounds, just in time for Christmas.

Sounds like a bargain! laugh.gif

Doubt I'll be back in NZ before Chrimbo though sad.gif

if u are refering to the Direct x 10 difference i can say that all u need is winxp or better as the programe will work fine in win xp providing u have a Direct X 10 compatible video card i found this out at my local pc store and he had it working

WinXP does NOT support DirectX 10... a DX10 compatible card will run in XP, but it will only be running DX9...

MS are not releasing DX10 for XP... its part of their 'force everyone to cough up for Vista' strategy...

i have seen dx10 runing fine under win xp and had it confirmed by a senior techs at both NEC computers and 10 Harvey Norman store as well as at my last job in Pc repair shop and the the pc showed that this works

hope this helps

I'll say it again, Microsoft is not making DirectX 10 for WinXP... there is no 'official' MS release of DX10 for WinXP...

There may be some 3rd party 'hacks' or wrappers (currently a pre-alpha preview release) that are trying to enable DX10 only games to run on XP... they are even trying to get DX10 only games to run on DX9 hardware by 'compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it'

However Phil Taylor has some interesting comments on this... and why its really a pipedream... the performance hit has to be huge...

And technically, they are not running DX10... they are really just mapping DX10 API calls to OpenGL...

Additionally, they havent updated the Alky Project or the FallingLeafSystems sites since August...

Far as I know DX10 is not for anything, yet.
Full spot.

I have given up on FSX for the time being and spent the last week reinstalling FS9. It is like coming home after a long trip away - everything just works fine and all the old add ons are just superb. FSX is for gamers not those who want a true flight experience - in my opinion!!
