Good autogen classes for NZ

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

I have meant to get around to your original question, sorry about the delay.
I've been doing some experimenting around Marlborough, but representing NZ is kind of tricky, that's for sure. The main problem I have is pinus radiata, which is not represented at all, and other common but under-represented trees like macrocarpa.
There are other choices to represent pine forests, as long as you don't get too close. There are various sizes of pine scrub, which are handy -- they can represent macrocarpa at a pinch -- but these are not as neat as pine trees.
At the moment, because its Autumn, my concern is to keep the riotous colour to a minimum:) There's a bit of colour around cities, of course, but generally out of town New Zealand stays pretty green. Excluding poplars, of course, which are really nice to put around the rivers etc.
For NZ bush, it is even trickier. For low dense bush (like around Marlborough Sounds) I may just leave the photo un-autogenned, just putting a few 'pines' in to give it a bit of height.
A good choice for real big NZ bush is Tropical Rainforest. Here's a shot of my test spot which I use to try different classes -- in Picton harbour.

This is autumn, you can just see a tiny bit of colour, but for the rest of the year its a nice even green.

Rob- Just coming back to this as ive been finalising the Mount Tarawera stuff....ive pretty much gone with that class for Native bush as well....I will just let people know not to fly in autumn! haha

Do you know much about the Autogen Classes? Obviously it is possible to create new XML classes which call new models (which would have to be built from scratch) BUT would creating a new class mean that everyone who wanted to see the trees would need to update their autogen.xml (or whatever the file is?)...not really a huge issue but just wondering how difficult it would be to distribute

I think it would be a great project...

Yes, you would need to alter the default autogen.xml, which is why this really needs to be all or nothing -- it's no good a bunch of different folk pottering around here, as you'll end up with a nightmare to install. This sort of project needs to be all or nothing. It would be a huge job, but would only need to be done once (per version...)
However with the right group, and someone to organise the final install, it would be a revolutionary development for NZ.

Yeah thought so....Well, its possible that after i make the move south, I wont have access to the imagery and terrain data that i have had up till now so that may give me time to work on a project like this.
