Scenery in Development

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby NZ255 » Sun Aug 16, 2009 11:04 pm

Hey scenery designers, I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to create a list where people post what airport/scenery areas they are making/or going to make, for what FlightSim, and the type eg. default buildings/photoreal etc.
BUT only if people reading this don't bug us for a release date tongue.gif

I think with more people getting into it, perhaps we should create this list so you don't spend weeks/months making an add-on, only to find someone else is doing the same thing.

Post your comments, would be interested to find out what you think.

Would this work on the NZFSIM site? I could create a new category for scenery. Pretty similar to aircraft (in most respects). THe advantage is that it could also support links tio respective files (if required).

This was in fact the reason for the Windowlight site when it first became a flightsim site, but it never came close to fulfilling this goal. First, developers are a secretive lot, and there are many reasons why they wouldn't announce a particular project. They may be working on a personal project and may leave the decision to release it to after its finished. They may not want the complication of people's expectations. They may not even be sure that they can complete the project to a reasonable standard.
So not only did we end up with the majority of releases coming out of the blue, we also had 95% of 'announced' projects never eventuating.

I agree with Mike regarding competition -- there's nothing wrong with a number of releases covering a particular project, there are as many different ways to create a scenery as there are potential developers. If you think you have something to offer for your local airport, for instance, then it doesn't matter if there is something already out there, the real question is can you do it better, and learn a lot in the process.
