Photoreal Coverage

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby SeanTK » Wed Mar 10, 2010 4:39 pm

Hello simmers,

I've been having a lot of fun with my many New Zealand airport sceneries spread throughout the country in FS2004. I have never been a big fan of "photoreal" scenery due to the usual lack of autogen, and the general strange appearance (in my opinion) of a flat photo in a virtual world that does not match up with the rendering style of the rest of the environment.
Add on to that the jarring differences in appearance when you reach a "scenery boundary" and you'll understand why I have been put off by such ventures.

With the above being said however, I was wondering just how much of FS2004 New Zealand can be covered in photographic addon scenery?

Is there enough photo scenery out there to cover the entire country without having to worry about boundary issues, or the issues of two different photo sceneries "matching" up with one another properly? (coloration, etc.)

I was thinking about taking the plunge and getting as much photographic landscape as possible for New Zealand, but I'm afraid that it would start to look like a complex patchwork of photo terrain (with and without autogen) mixed with blocks of default, which in my opinion, would look absolutely atrocious and would not look realistic at all.

I'm currently using the freeware 75m mesh, along with "Roads & Rivers of New Zealand" payware, and VOZ 1.8 "North" Textures. With this I came to the realization that my rendition of New Zealand actually looks too green!
Is it possible to at least fully cover one of the two main islands in photographic scenery?

Thanks,

-Sean smile.gif

That's what I suspected. winkyy.gif

I guess I'll stick with the VOZ + RoadsRivers + mesh + landclass combination!

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. smile.gif

Another way of answering this question is to look at Google Earth. The aerial photos and Sat imagery available to make photoreal scenery is far less than coverage in Google Earth and you can see (as you already mentioned) there will always be huge colour issues. Add to this the file sizes involved and you would need one heck of a HDD to cover it all !! But all in time, it will eventuate one day. Although I think (eventually) we will be simming over a Google Earth type environ stored online, with only certain FS data stored on our drives.
In the meantime on first leap forward will be the Vector Landclass. This will at least make the default NZ look like NZ!

Funny you should say that Deane(simming over a Google Earth type environ stored online).....i was talking to a computer Phd dude today, and he was talking about "cloud" computing....just as you said, basic apps on your HD , and god knows what else just sitting on a giant server somewhere....amazing stuff.

Hmm , again the GOOGLE .. think its best to stick with proven and simply buy scenery , many have grand ideas on how what when , the source is there but cant use it .. the time to place , autogen it , model it , heck ,better of just paying for a scenery and it is SO cheap .
