There is this, at Avsim:
File Description:
The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is the American scientific research station on the high plateau of Antarctica. This station is located at the southernmost place on the Earth, the Geographic South Pole, at an elevation of 2,835 meters (9301 feet) above sea level. Since the Amundsen-Scott Station is located at the South Pole, it is at the only place on the land surface of the Earth where the sun is continuously up for six months and then continuously down for six months. (The only other such place is at the North Pole, on the sea ice in the middle of the Arctic Ocean.) Thus, during each year, this station experiences one extremely long "day" and one extremely long "night". During the six-month "day", the angle of elevation of the Sun above the horizon varies continuously. The sun rises on the September equinox, reaches its maximum angle above the horizon on the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, around 20 December, and sets on the March equinox. During the six-month "night", it gets extremely cold at the South Pole, with air temperatures sometimes dropping below -73°C (-100°F). This is also the time of the year when blizzards, sometimes with gale-force winds, strike the Amundsen-Scott Station. The continuous period of darkness and dry atmosphere make the station an excellent place from which to make astronomical observations. This file has the apron and characteristics of the airport the coordenates are placed as far south as FS allow it.

And of course there is the Aerosoft payware - but that too is subject to the capabilities of FSX. Essentially, the high polar regions do not exist in FS2004 or FSX. I have the FSGlobal 2010 mesh, which covers a greater area than FS default, but it still does not go to 89 North, or south. AFAIK, the sim engine just can't handle the navigation. There is a thread on CalClassic, about using a sun compass for trans-polar flights, but that is for FS2004. I don't know if it would translate to FSX.

Wow, am amazed to hear it doesn't. I thought that would be an obvious thing to have in an Antarctica addon biggrin.gif

No Aerosoft didnt do it because of the crazy way FS deals with the area,...interestingly XPlane has no scenery at either poles AT ALL....nothing past 60° north or south as far as I can see,..and when anybody asks about the South Pole in particular the moderators and "community Leaders will promptly basically suggest your an idiot for even asking. Cant say I am impressed with their forums and their attitudes from what Ive read.

Interesting..
I thought since FSX was an actual 'globe' that the poles were easily accessible? I've not flown there, but been meaning to in order to check it out. Things got weird the last time I tried.... in FS2004 laugh.gif

Real-life navigation gets pretty weird at the poles. A simple magnetic compass always points to N, but when you are overhead the S magnetic pole,, every direction is N, so it just spins round. There are technical developments to make navigation reliable, but the FS engine is not able to simulate them. I too had high hopes for a genuine "round earth" in FSX...

This is about as far as you can go in FSX - 89 deg S.

Yes, things get pretty weird down there laugh.gif

The Amundsen-Scott Station scenery referred to above is actually placed several degrees north of its real world location so it is within the extents of what properly exists in FSX.

I spend eleven months of the year in the UK and one in NZ. I'm hoping to improve that... ;-)
