I have just installed Tom Knudsens FPS Enhancement Package V2, from Avsim - (This Months Biggest Downloads.)

After brief testing I am happy to report that my frame rates seem to have improved considerably.

Flying the default Maule out of Tauranga, I was recording 40 on the ground at the terminal and varying up to 80 whilst flying above Tauranga. (Rates set to unlimited.)

While it is early to be positive, this seems to be a big improvement to what I was previously getting on my modest set-up.

If anyone is struggling with frame-rates I would suggest giving it a trial, provided you back-up the relevant stuff first there's
nothing to lose.

I grabbed that too this week and some other landclass bits and pieces .... it's made quite a difference, both in fps and how the FS world looks smile.gif

All he's done is reduce the size of some of the autogen textures.

Some have been sharpened a bit too . I guess with less file size they load quicker. Whatever it is, it worked for me smile.gif

Yes, halving the dimensions means they only use a quarter of your graphics memory. If you don't get too close to autogen objects -- and who does -- then this is a good way to improve performance, but pilot.masman's reaction shows how careful you need to be understanding marketing speak -- basically you are throwing away quality for performance. 'Sharpened' I take to mean that since he didn't have the original uncompressed files to work with, he had to start with the already-DXT-compressed versions, which would need some tidying up to preserve the quality. All that talk about building alpha channels simply means that his original attempt to resize the textures lost the alphas so he had to put them back:)

I may seem a bit tough on this sort of thing, when really it does a great job, but it does represent a new trend in FS -- marketing by omission, where you need to dig a bit to find out what the product actually does.

I agree Robin, I unzipped the files, compared them to what was default, moved the default ones for safe keeping and compared before over writing.

Me to, however the frame rates on my machine are so up and down, I'd be pretty brave to suggest how much actual improvement I have. I think this
would take a lot of research to define the benefits. At the moment things seem ok, and there's always the back-up. By the way, it's freeware.

Yes thanks heaps. I do this with my FS9 install, but have wanted to do it for some time with my FSX install. I found the file in the top monthly downloads thing.

It might be just me, but I wish there was some sort of filter to turn off all the A.I files in those lists. There are no doubt many brilliant files slipping under the radar simply because of all the lists being dominated by A.I downloads. Who seriously downloads all that? lol
