just spent the evening installing a LOT of nz airports etc and after installing the "VLC_NthAirfields_Install V1.2" I am receiving an error report whenever i exit the SCENERY LIBRARY with FSX

ERROR REPORT = "SCENERY.CFG file error. Local scenery directory (VLC_Airfields\SCENERY) in scenery Area.127 not found. Click OK to continue."


may be my fault, I carried out the install, didn't add to scenery library automatically (unticked option within the installer) then moved the directory VLC_Airfields to my ....FSX\Addon Scenery_NZ directory (thats just me being all OCD and trying to keep a semi tidy looking FSX install) and "ADD AREA" from there???

any suggestions chasps???

You'd need to track down the entry and delete it from the scenery library. To do this, open your scenery.cfg file (see my other post with how to locate this) and find out what Area.127 is. Then delete the entry from the Scenery Library within FSX.

It sounds like you've shifted a scenery folder without removing it from the Scenery Library first, and it's looking for the old location.

Bear in mind that you will have problems from time to time if you shift scenery around like that. I think someone has mentioned folder redirection before, which is a much better idea if you must shift scenery folders. No doubt someone can point you at this info.

or i could just leave well enough alone lol,

in conjuction with my my other post i just worked from top of the "available scenery areas:" list with the edit function to ID the scenery then used the delete function, working my way back down the list......... at some point i discovered your reply to the other post and it seemed to come together in the end?????????????

maybe i'd just be better off letting the VLC_###### scenaries install where they will or is there another option/way to achieve this???

Really you should be able to move your scenery folders anywhere you like, provided you add them to the Scenery Library AFTER the move. However some scenery folders, such as the VLC libraries, rely on a registry pointer which allows for an easy update of the library -- shifting this folder will mean that you can't update it properly. So leaving them at the default install location is the best option. Scenery like Orbx which uses an external tool to manage regions also needs to be left alone. (Although they are a good candidate for redirection --- see below.)

I did mention redirects, but maybe these wouldn't be the solution here. This involves making a symbolic link to another location, and it is a good solution for those who use SSD drives, where they want to put FSX and scenery on 2 separate drives. This has been discussed here.

You could do this with individual scenery folders, and I do use it for some, but it won't help you tidy up your FSX folder -- although the scenery folders are shifted, the link still shows up as a folder, which is just as messy as having the original folder.

So the choices are to shift them where you like, but be aware that you might lose some features, such as auto-updates, or leave them where they are and just ignore your FSX folder -- sure, you'll end up with a lot of folders there, but it won't do any harm. Remember that there are plenty of ways to search for particular files or folders.
