Guess-and-check has always worked for me!

I've just completed my first 'proper' FSX repaint, and it's a rather steep learning curve (which is why the next installment of 'Blighty' is late!). Getting DXTBMP to write DDS files is a black art, and the specular and bump map files do your head in! It's easier if you have a full up to date edition of Photoshop, but that's way beyond my budget!

You should read the SDK 'Texturing Aircraft Models' document.

Load the SDK Overview.html file, and you'll find the link in the first paragraph under the heading "Environment Kit"

yeah guess and check is the way I do it. I think there's a paint kit for the Jetranger around somewhere tho.
