Tutorial SubForm?

Just adding on from Splitpin's idea surrounding the creation of a subform named Tutorials that he mentioned in the Screenshot Competition Discussion thread. But wouldn't it be great to have something like this? I mean, I for one love passing my knowledge onto others. There could be topics regarding 'How to repaint an aircraft', 'How to use VATSIM', and 'How to set up ILS landings', just as a few examples. I know I would appreciate that help. It'll take a fair bit of work to get going, sure, but I'd be keen to try.

Splitpin, you keen?

Yeah, fingers crossed. Because at the end of the day, it's us who are going to be getting the benefits of it.

Great idea guys, if you have any other topics you think would be worth including in this manner then post them here in this thread so we can consider them all in tomorrow nights meeting.

As Doug suggested the TeamSpeak channel is a wicked way to share info, you learn an awful lot in a short time from chatting with those in the know as compared to reading a long multi-page thread looking for nuggets, of course the chat relies on people being online at the same time vs the asynchronous forum thread thing, both have value.

If we do setup these new topics it would be handy to have someone as a moderator of each who could maintain a sticky top-post that kind of summarises a best practice and maybe includes links to other resources of use concerning a particular topic. In many cases these sorts of howtos are done to death all over the web so be great to summarise and link to stuff thats out there already rather then reinvent the wheel.

Good idea Tom ,

I think as more get added , have admin pin the topic - this specific sub-forum wont need a chat service with it .. Just the fact , how to post screens - how to join TS - update info for system - make independent folder for general OS and general range of systems rather all thrown into one - example : FS9-Win98 - FS-9WinXp - FS-9Win7 and so on .

Maybe as i found out today how to post video , as simple as it was , it may seem challenging to some - so obviously a well planned fix thread folder to be post with the idea for admin to go through and edit and adjust - simple terms a new idea thread to be introduced and worked on .

If I could, I would attend also, but ah, the perils of being a part time worker. Please let me know how it goes.

Hi guys,

We just had a meeting and the idea of a Tutorial thread has been discussed too. While we all support the idea of having tutorials available on the forum we don't think that a dedicated thread is really justified. Look at the "Reviews" thread for example. Every now-and-then (about 3 times a year) someone uploads a nice little review but it's not something we'd an active thread.

Instead what we'll do is whenever someone posts a tutorial we'll make it a sticky in the relevant thread (Aircraft, Technical issues, etc) with a "Tutorial" prefix. This way the it'll be easy to find while keeping the simple structure of the forum by avoiding additional threads to scroll through.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from, just not enough of an interest to justify the expense of setting up a whole new thread. I've got a couple tutorials floating around on my laptop now, so I'll eventually get around to posting them up to YouTube, then we'll go from there in regards to posting them and sticky-ing them.

Cheers,
-T
