When I flew in & out of there in the early 80's Safe Air were doing the run with Argosy aircraft.
I recall a story a bloke over there told me about coming out to NZ when they were running the Bristol Freighter.
They had taken off into a strong head wind, which isn't uncomon over there. He said the noise was deafening & he was amazed a see a pop rivet spinning round in the fusilage near his seat. After an hour they were only over Waitangi, a distance of about 40k. At that point the pilot advised they were turning back & would try again tomorow.

Sweet pics- I've always had quite an unexplained fascination with the 580 aircraft. They look so old and gracefull or something... would love to sit up front in one someday. Cheers for sharing!

Sounds like a tall story to me, as Waitangi is only about 7km from the airstrip. I used to fly with a few of the safe guys, from memory the record back into the mainland was about 3.6 hours

You are right about that distance, is was 27 years ago & my memory isn't the greatest. I had to have a look on the map. Tuuta airport 19.5k from Waitangi. It was Kiangaroa that was 40k from Waitangi. I remember driving it in an old Landrover & getting 2 punctures on the way.
