South Island Trip

Here are some photos from a South Island trip I had a while ago. I didn't have my usual camera on hand but out of the ones I did get, these were the best.

I had 5 flights on this trip routing ROT-CHC-ZQN-WKA-CHC-ROT.

Also to note: ZK-MCB had a tug attached to it. It's the first time I've seen a tug attached to an ATR-72. Seems to be quite popular to do that in Christchurch due to it being the base of Mount Cook Airline (due to them having 11 ATR-72s).

Sorry Chappie , not a tug , ya see the greens out there directly in front of you , Pilot Golf Carts , pluggin to shoot either Russley golf course but seem to more aimed at the Harewood Golf course

Talked to my dad(a mount cook pilot), and he said they never use tugs.

Okay it wasn't a tug but there is diffidently attached to MCB. Thanks for all your contributions into solving the mystery. Maybe airlines in other counties use tugs on ATR-72s:http

Golf carts they are then and only for the pilots .

Hi, we do in fact use tugs on the ATR here in Christchurch. It is not for the purpose of starting or pushback. Rather the engineers use them to tow the aircraft down to the hangers at the end of the day for overnight checks. What you are looking at in these pictures, is a tug/golfcart attached to our GPU which we use for starting..... this is a typical set up for all our turnarounds in New Zealand. We use the GPU to start HOTEL ( number two engine with prop brake engaged ) Then we disconnect GPU, powering all the systems independantly. This is the reason we can start and taxi of a gate so fast, as when we get a start clearance we already have one engine running although not spinning a prop. Hope this makes sense

Thanks for the inside info on that: always nice to know how things actually play out in the real world. And yes, makes sense.
