Digital Camera Choices

Hey guys, past while have seen some awesome photos posted in our forums and was wondering the pros and cons of various digital cameras makes and models out there.

It comes down to money in the end. Gavin uses a canon 5D Mark II for most of his work (I think), but they cost about 4 1/2 grand, and then you've got to buy some nice glass to put infront of it. I use an older, far more consumer-aimed 350d, which is nothing next to a 5D, and I'd like to upgrade, but it's cheap. Do you want to dElve into the world of DSLRs or are would you be happy with a superzoom?

It s a pity some people dont put there money into there PC rather a camera , well since many screens posted here are 'bloody horrid' , i went walk abouts other day browsing camera s and just like cr@p screens you get cr@p sales ... would not call em 'person' but 'bloody liar s' , you want a good camera you need the dollar and research.

End off the day , its the same thing , takes years to get that sweet screen off a PC due to constant build and dollar , the same would apply with a camera it comes down to what you are going to use the most , i now need both , you cant compare to Gavin , hes a pro - you dont see flightsim screens from him , sorta the one with the hi end pc that can take good screens with all the AI /AGN weather and aircraft detail .

A great camera would be nice, but technique and an eye for composition are important too, you dont need to spend too much these days to get a reasonable camera/lens combo. (unless you're a pro like Gavin)

I've got a Nikon D90. Very happy with what it does. I sell some of my photos (non aviation) as photo prints and canvases. I've been to the airport a couple of times and have been happy with the results, just need a longer lens to get better close ups.

Know a few people who have just bought Nikon D5100 units. They seem pretty cool and are 16MP. Good value for the unit with twin lens ($1600-ish), but of course they're not pro cameras either.

Yeah, I guess it depends on how you want to use it - a DSLR is nice, but kind of a lot to cart around. I've always owned SLRs, and probably always will, but changing lenses at airports -- especially airshows -- is a guaranteed way to get dust on the sensor. So I'd consider a super-zoom if I needed to start over. Or at least a super-zoom for my SLR.

After spending a lot of time choosing a kit for my son last year, I'm amazed how much SLRs have improved over the last few years since I bought my Canon 350D. There's so much quality choices, makes it real difficult to choose!

Jokes aside, maybe 90% of the stuff in my photo folder consists of iPhone Kwikpics, and they do maybe 90% of the job.
Lugging a big camera around is OK if you're headed for an airshow, but most times, you'd simply miss the shot.

I think it comes down to personal choice in the end. I personally will never turn back from my DSLR, lugging around 3+ kilos of camera gear doesn't bother me.

I've got a Canon 550D - good performance for what is a quite reasonably priced camera (less than $1,000 for just the body) but you do need a decent lens to get really good results and unfortunately that's where the real money is!

I have just done the exercise, & sold my slr because it was to bulky to take overseas so i purchased a point & shoot Canon Powershot a3100is you can set it on auto & shoot takes great photos. Its light & you can carry in your pocket. See the photos i have put on the forum.

Will need to spend some time figuring out my camera needs to begin with. The 3 or 4 k scene would be too much for me, just can not prioritize that much cash at this point. However looks like lots of options under that.
