Saw this, this afternoon in the Cargo yard(Air Force) at CHC.
Just a forward section, tail parts and 2 wing tanks......any clues as to where it might going?....or come from.





Sorry about the fence...but there were some grumpy looking avsec guys hanging around, and i didnt feel like any agro today.

At first I thought that was a Sabre, but sure looks like it is a Meteor. Look forward to answer too !!

I thought so too at the start, but .....(you cant see in the pic) the tail section is meteor...plus those little bumps just forward of the cockpit aren't F-86

those 4 little bumps would have been where the 4 20mm cannons would have been

I think your right h290master.......this pic is from an example at duxford in the UK.

Its a Meteor and no doubt its the ex RAAF example thats going to the Ashburton Aviation Museum.

Didn't take them long to get it here, nice to see it on our shores already.

thats a shame if they arent restoring it to flying order would be nice having more classic jets airbourne

It would cost millions to restore such an aircraft to be airworthy and even then, you would somehow have to find or restore the engines which were pretty un-reliable. I think the engines had a useful life of a few hundred flying hours only.

If money were no object, would it be feasible to use diff engines? The P-51 can take a Merlin, so could the Meteor take something else? Obviously there is a lot more to using a different jet engine than a piston, but...

Heck - lets face it - if money were no object you could practically build anything!! In fact I'm pretty sure there is a place in the States that can build a new mustang from scratch (engine excluded), but to be within regulations they can't build "new" airframes, they can only restore old ones, even if they are stripped to the serial plate and built around it !! Engines are a lot more difficult as they are not easily fabricated, so to tool up and reproduce an old style engine would be a ludicrously expensive exercise, hence the only option is to rebuild existing types. I don't know what else would fit a Meteor, but you would want to have an old style centrifugal compressor turbojet to get the authentic sound. Meteors were powered by Rolls Royce Derwent engines and i'm not sure how available engines and spare parts are these days.

For me .....if money was no object .......I'd be flying a Lancaster !!

I realise "if money was no object" sounds very much like wishful thinking (and it most certainly is!) - I was just curious as to the practical side of working around the problem of old, unreliable engines. I figured that the Meteor's design would severely - perhaps totally - limit any attempt to use a different engine type. I'm not so worried about the sound - heck, the sound of a Merlin coming out of a P51 is weird (if beautiful... ) to me! And I have heard of 1 of those outfits that you mention who build the Mustangs - I think I even stumbled over their website sometime in the last couple of years.

Yep, a Lanc is certainly a worthy "if money were no object" purchase - one of my favs (have read a couple of books about them, specifically the Dam Buster squadron's contribution to the Lanc fame). There are so many excellent aircraft to chose from, I'm not sure what my "IMWNO" aircraft would be - MK22 Spitfire, ME109 Gustav, ME262, Short Stirling, Beaufighter, Westland Whirlwind, Focke Wulf Condor, ME110 (Night Fighter variant), B36 Peacemaker, Foxbat - so many to chose from!
