Thanks deeknow.......there's some major construction going on at the deep freeze apron at the moment, and the crash gate was open.....so..... ninja.gif .....never let a chance go by.....i asked a contractor if i could sit on his truck for a couple of minutes biggrin.gif God those T7's sound amazing....deep rumbleing sound, not like a jet at all.....and the smell of jet fuel....ahhhhhhh.

I believe it is a result of the way the beast has been designed. I had a tour through the C17 and posed the same question to the Master Sergeant Loadmaster. The answer he gave was because it was developed to be able to deploy to unprepared landing strips. When reverse thrust is engaged, the cascades open on the top and not the bottom which directs the thrust forwards and upwards. This is supposed to reduce brownout, FOD induction and jet blast - which allows combatants to deplane as soon as the aircraft slows to a suitable speed!! I've also read that it reduces engine wear by preventing windmilling while parked.........

Back in my day son , twas the smell of jet fuel and grass clippings after mowing the lawn on a NorthWester wind in Yaldhurst

Ah OK the fan is shuttered.
I guess in the desert that has some benefit, and because it's in the drill manual, NZCH too!

biggrin.gif , it is strange tho the smells and smoke off burnt kero as the 73 s climbed out course back then also enjoyed the sound ...... it don,t figure , these days they build around airports people complain , but in the local streets burn rubber get the smoke and a stereo that can blow the streets windows out . winkyy.gif and that,s a car! - arrr Welcome to our world , wont you come on in

Good shots of a nice aircraft. Last time I flew on a NZ 777 (to Fiji), I got an upgrade. Always happy to see that the flight is operated by a 777, better than a plastic Airbus. Sad to see the 747s slowly disappearing but the 777 is not a bad replacement.

You were lucky to get airside access for the photos AND to have sunshine AND be there at the right time!!
