I read this morning that the Aussies have moved their Ice support flight's base to Christchurch.Their ice runway at Casey has melted and they are flying an Airbus A19 to McMurdo.Has anyone seen this plane at CHCH and if so ,what are the markings. The American Deep Freeze planes regularly fly overhead my place and pretty much overhead the Sign of the Kiwi en route south.Never seen an Airbus though.

Ian , I'm pleased with that announcement , i would be disappointed with the lost of the US base , now part off Christchurch Heritage cool.gif

Heat closes Antarctic ice runway

AUSTRALIA'S $45 million Antarctic ice runway has been unused this season because it is too hot.

The 4km Wilkins runway, which opened in 2008, sits on ice 500m thick inland of Australia's Casey station.

But the Australian Antarctic Division's Airbus A319 has been unable to make a single flight this season because of warm temperatures.

Instead, the aircraft has been shuttling between Hobart, Christchurch and the US base at McMurdo Sound 2100km east of Casey.
