Hi everyone - I maybe going to Auckland for a holiday soon and will probably do some spotting at AKL - I was just wanting to know whether there is a deck above the domestic terminal and if so how to get up there

Cheers

No there's not unfortunately....... the best viewing platform is the public carpark on Puhinui Road which overlooks the 23L threshold. Otherwise the Skydeck at the International Terminal is your only other option.....

Pretty sure I've seen some good shots taken from the multistory carpark behind the domestic terminal, but I've never tried it.

There isn't a huge amount of parking at Puhunui Rd so you might have to wait for a bit until somebody leaves, there's no way to get there by public trransport, and no easy way to get from one side of the road to the other (the carpark is in 2 parts).

I've used the multistory carpark behind the domestic terminal before. Its a good spot. You need a decent size lens (around 300mm from memory) but you do get a pretty good view of both runways.

You're quite correct, there used to be one but the airport company took it out a few years ago. They extended the Koru Lounge and reworked some of the arrival and departure gates. The best you have in domestic now is a couple of windows down by the Air NZ baggage claim area which looks out over a small part of the ramp!! The price of 'progress' and 'improvements' I suppose....... dry.gif

Christchurch was famous for its viewing spots ..... end off the day ... what is so wrong not putting a staircase to structures that handle 100s of thousands per month on top of these buildings .... trouble with airport company,s these days .. no vision

Where is the best spotting place at Christchurch Airport nowadays? - considering the viewing deck is now closed - are going there tomorrow
