Help- my PC won't boot!

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Today, I took my DVD writer out of my PC, as it was not working proberly and as it was still under warrenty, I took it down to Dicksmith Electronics where I purchased it from and asked for a replacemnet- I didnt get one, instead, they said they would send it off to get fixed, which would take 10 days.

I wasn't too worried, as I thought my PC would still run fine, and I could do without a DVD writer for that amount of time.

I turned on mt PC, and got an error message on the first black and white screen:

'Reboot and select proper boot device'

I did so, but there was no where for me to select any options, only the same error message. I thought this must be because it is missing the DVD drive, so I installed one of my old CD drives in it's place but still got the same message

I am writing this post from my Dad's PC (man the banner looks horrid in a 1280x1024 resoultion!). Could someone please tell me what I need to do to fix this? I want to be able to play flightsim tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day... I can't go 10 days cold turkey

At least I can still access NZFF for help though ;)

Cheers,
Andrew

seems odd. it sounds like its trying to find the dvd drive in the bios. if you had the hard disk connected to the same IDE channel, or you bumped the data cable out of it, that could be the problem. have a play around in the bios boot order, look for your hard disk.

what sort of comp is it?? is it a 'brand name' PC like a DELL or an HP or something??

But it sounds like the comp is expecting your DVD to be there for some reason... possibly something in the BIOS, but I have never met a comp where you needed to have an optical driver connected to make it work...

possible that by removing the DVD, your comp/BIOS has reassigned drive letters or something so the boot loader cannot find your windows partition.

You might want to ensure that your HDD is actually set to Primary Master IDE device.

go to bios and change booting order to h/drive first/ boot dvd"rom"to disable then it will just boot from h/d not try and do dvd,if you get what i mean you can choise what booting order you like 123 or disable ,,
hope this helps well it should
mike

EDIT:your dvd is at the moment the first thing your puter does when starting is boot / "this is normal default when installing windows /then hard disc /last h/drive,whatever way they set it,
so your puter is looking for that first"dvd" to boot ,
now the thing is you have to go to the bios and change that order for ten days to hard floppy/then h/drive and just disable the dvd boot up for now till its back in ezy??
